Martin rejects softwood negotiation

OTTAWA -- Prime Minister Paul Martin has warned U.S. President George W. Bush that Canada will wage its battle over softwood lumber in American courts -- and in the court of public opinion.

Martin spoke with Bush by phone Friday but the leaders failed to make any progress on the softwood issue. It was unclear which leader made the call.

But officials said afterwards that neither budged from his original position on softwood lumber during the 20-minute chat.

Bush maintained that he prefers a negotiated settlement, said officials for both Martin and the president.

"The president said he believes we need to get back to the negotiating table and try to find a lasting solution," said White House spokesman Scott McClellan.

As it means lower prices for the American consumer and lower costs for the builders, too, this is the best idea yet.We know the lumber cartels want the tariffs left on because this means far greater profit for them[and Bush is only a tool for them]

RE: Martin rejects negoti

We'll have to see what Martin actually does. The court case is an action that should have been taken long ago, and it will likely be tied up for years. Time for that has long since passed.

I say put an export tax on all energy (oil, gas, and electricity) going to the US. They still have to buy it, especially gas and electricity. Start the tax out low and have it increase everty month until it equals the illegal duty they charge on softwood.

In the meantime, lets look for other markets for our goods and rebuild our infrastructure so we become self-sufficient again.

That's another good one :) And the export tax would go straight to Ottawa, giving Canada some tangible benefits taxwise that Alberta already has[the gigantic surplus]

Well, we should likely give the first 5 billion to the softwood guys, since they won't be getting their money back from Bush any time soon.

You're being too fair,Rev. I would rather hope the American forests all be incinerated first and then we could triple our prices to them.

I think that PM Martin is a lying bag of s**t and is just posturing for the Canadian people for the upcoming election. Otherwise ms. Rice wouldn't have been here all pompous and repeating the same 'negotiation' message. Further, it may not be subsidized but our stumpage fee is so low we are practically giving our natural resources away to international logging companies for a few jobs. If the levy is returned, a good chunk of it should be served in windfall profits to the Canadian public.
