Canadians, we like to smugly remind ourselves, are generally free from the crushing yoke of U.S.-style campaign spending.
Last year, a single Pennsylvania Senate race racked up $150 million CDN in partisan spending. In Canada, meanwhile, we pulled off our last federal election for only $100 million.
But Canada is home to its own uniquely annoying ad phenomenon: The “vanity ad.”
Known to any Canadians with a T.V. or internet connection, these are taxpayer-funded ads that serve no other purpose other than to assure Canadians that the incumbent government is doing a good job.
And in Canada, these types of ads are truly a non-partisan exercise.
