after $14 billion spending spree

OTTAWA — The federal government ran a deficit of $12.7 billion over the first eight months of its 2016-17 fiscal year — compared with a $1-billion surplus during the same period a year earlier.

The Finance Department’s monthly fiscal monitor says the shortfall was due to a $14-billion surge in expenses, including a $7.1-billion increase in direct program costs to the treasury.

The double-digit deficit figure is not a surprise since the Trudeau government has pledged to run deficits over the coming years as it tries to boost the economy through infrastructure investments and larger child benefits.

The report says the April-to-November spike in expenses included multibillion-dollar increases in payments for child and seniors benefits as well as bigger transfers to other levels of government.

Over the same period, the government says its revenues were down $1.1 billion compared with the year before — a decline due to the one-time gain in 2015 from Ottawa’s $2.1-billion sale of its holdings in General Motors.

The report says Ottawa’s books showed a $3.3-billion deficit in November alone — down from a $400-million surplus in November 2015.

Worrying about debt is pointless.

You should be concerned over something real, like climate change.

As usual you got that backwards. We can control debt but only a fool believes he can influence climate.

Actually MF got it right. Not doing something about global warming is going to be a lot more expensive than the national debt, which is something you would understand if you were not so dogmatic in your views.

Climate is very important, but how much of the 12.7 Billion has really gone toward climate? I believe it was around 2.8 billion. We know the banks have reported that he spent 5.3 billions in his first 100 days ( 4.3 outside of Canada, 1 inside). Wonder if Canadians could have used that money; say like our seniors, aboriginals, health, education !! National Bank's has predicted a deficit of 90 billion in JT's 4 yrs of ruling. We shall see, bringing down the deficit was one of his priorities during the election, LOL.

Yes of course giving the government more of our hard earned money should do a lot to counter climate change .I mean they spend so intelligently and frugally that surely with just another 5 or 10 % of our money they would only be in deficit 30 billion . Yikes .

They said by the end of 2017 the debt will pay itself off now its been pushed to 2018 and then after that the only way to pay off the debt would be to give the liberals a second majority....

"Worrying about debt is pointless. You should be concerned over something real, like climate change."

So when the Bank is about to foreclose on your house, you should be more concerned about the smoke coming out of the chimney?

That's a 'Canoe sheds to connect with the land' statement if I ever heard one.

You are as dumb as flossy if you believe in AGW. Now run along and play with flossy while the adults have an intelligent conversation.

They won't.

That's why I don't worry about it.

Thats because you don't have a mortgage. Speak to your parents maybe they can enlighten you.
