The proposed carbon tax forecast for 2017 is supposed to be about meeting our commitment to the environment and stepping up on the world stage as a leader in the War against Climate Change. But is it really?
First and foremost, the new tax is supposed to be implemented to try and lesson people's use of carbon emitting technologies. But the fact is that it will simply open the wallets of taxpayers across the board so that our political masters can reach in and snap up a lot more of our money. There is no fund in place for the proposed carbon tax in which it is re-invested into environmental projects, in fact, it is exactly like the sin tax of cigarettes or alcohol. They think they will get you to burn less carbon, but what they really get out of this deal is more of your money and as per normal the people most affected by this tax will be the middle and lower classes of Canadian Society.
Rich folks will pay as well, but that will not alter them from buying the same gas guzzling vehicles they can afford to drive. It will not make them turn down their air conditioners at peak hours or wash their dishes at non peak hours. It will be business as usual, except the Feds will collect an estimated extra $3000.00 from middle class families who are already faced with an economic slowdown due to the drop in world oil prices.
And my, when you think about it, what a coincidence. The significant drop in fuel prices has meant a major shortfall in taxes collected on fuel, so what a great way to boost revenue for a government that is spending like money is no object. Meanwhile, the family who can't afford to invest in a Volt or a Tesla will be forced to fork over more cash. Like sin taxes of the past, the money collected will go right into general revenue and while families suffer under this new tax, the feds along with their provincial counterparts will start implementing increases for our own good.
If you're waiting for the climate change plan, the one that will make Canada stand out on the world stage, don't hold your breath. Because this is it it. There will be no money for new technology. There will be no investment to reduce carbon footprints and there will be no incentive to go greener. No tax breaks.
This is the plan. You folks give them the money and they will spend it on whatever they want. Income tax was collected to cover the expense of war. Road taxes were collected to cover roads. The Goods Services Tax, proposed revenue neutral tax that it was, never became revenue neutral and like all it's predecessors ended up in general revenue.
Quite frankly, the carbon tax is an invented tax and those who drink the Kool-Aid will soon find that the tax they signed up for does nothing in the war on climate change. But by then it will be too late and we will all be a lot poorer.
