The proposed carbon tax forecast for 2017 is supposed to be about meeting our commitment to the environment and stepping up on the world stage as a leader in the War against Climate Change. But is it really?

First and foremost, the new tax is supposed to be implemented to try and lesson people's use of carbon emitting technologies. But the fact is that it will simply open the wallets of taxpayers across the board so that our political masters can reach in and snap up a lot more of our money. There is no fund in place for the proposed carbon tax in which it is re-invested into environmental projects, in fact, it is exactly like the sin tax of cigarettes or alcohol. They think they will get you to burn less carbon, but what they really get out of this deal is more of your money and as per normal the people most affected by this tax will be the middle and lower classes of Canadian Society.

Rich folks will pay as well, but that will not alter them from buying the same gas guzzling vehicles they can afford to drive. It will not make them turn down their air conditioners at peak hours or wash their dishes at non peak hours. It will be business as usual, except the Feds will collect an estimated extra $3000.00 from middle class families who are already faced with an economic slowdown due to the drop in world oil prices.

And my, when you think about it, what a coincidence. The significant drop in fuel prices has meant a major shortfall in taxes collected on fuel, so what a great way to boost revenue for a government that is spending like money is no object. Meanwhile, the family who can't afford to invest in a Volt or a Tesla will be forced to fork over more cash. Like sin taxes of the past, the money collected will go right into general revenue and while families suffer under this new tax, the feds along with their provincial counterparts will start implementing increases for our own good.

If you're waiting for the climate change plan, the one that will make Canada stand out on the world stage, don't hold your breath. Because this is it it. There will be no money for new technology. There will be no investment to reduce carbon footprints and there will be no incentive to go greener. No tax breaks.

This is the plan. You folks give them the money and they will spend it on whatever they want. Income tax was collected to cover the expense of war. Road taxes were collected to cover roads. The Goods Services Tax, proposed revenue neutral tax that it was, never became revenue neutral and like all it's predecessors ended up in general revenue.

Quite frankly, the carbon tax is an invented tax and those who drink the Kool-Aid will soon find that the tax they signed up for does nothing in the war on climate change. But by then it will be too late and we will all be a lot poorer.

It")'s just another sales tax on gasolene and other similar things. The proceeds will be umped into General Revenues, along with other "social investment" money, such as your E.I. premiums.

I will go the the barricades if they try to slap a carbon consumption tax on my electricity, though, as it is all generated by nuclear and hydro where I live. I doubt that this fact will stop them, as the main purpose of "taxing our carbon consumption" is to fill government coffers.

Liberals are in, they need more and more money. The GDP only produces so much, and traditionally their answer has always been tax the people; this is no exception. It's another tax grab for which, no doubt some of it will have to go to pay for the promises made in Paris, but the collection will be like the bunny, with no ending in site, so the Liberals will be getting a gift that keeps on giving and giving. Good move for them, but no so good for Canadians. Their job is obviously not to make our lives better, it's to make theirs more comfortable.

That's the liberal way alright , Most Canadians forgot and the young were promised legal pot , they didn't know about past liberal entitlements ,only that Harper was evil and Duffy you know . But the young will be disillusioned when legal pot never happens and Canadians will remember the past liberals and connect the dots .
Hopefully we won't have a new method of counting liberal ballots by then .

It's likely not posdible to legallize pot without tearing up all of our multilateral agreements around the world ... just the sort of agreements (like UN agreements controlling drug trafficing, INTERPOL, NATO, anything connecting us to the Americans) that the Liberals pride themselves in. I can forsee naive Canadian tourists getting into very big trouble in places like Indonesia, the Phillipines, Thailand, Singapore figuring that EVERYWHERE is now rainbows and unicorns, now that Trudeau has legallized it in Canada. Some of those tourists may even be executed.

It just ain't going to fly.

co2 is a gas that plants eat and people breath out
so its a breathing and eating tax

which is as far from freedom as you can get

Oh, and about pot: hillary told the bankers that make billions from money laundering drug money that she will not stand for legalizing it in anyway because doing so would screw up her masters...
Like the ones running oil out of iraq and opium out of afghanistan courtesy of the US military mercenaries

Has anyone see a draft of the carbon tax scam? Does it apply to exports or only domestic consumption? The BC carbon scam gives exports a pass because apparently once oil is out of BC it no longer pollutes.

Let's call a good policy a good policy.

Another tax on all of us ,, rich, poor, everyone ...

It's democratic, allright but good policy? Good policy would be to find another way for government to function without the levy if yet another type of tax. They are wringing the last juice out of a lot of us.

You can't do it any other way.

It's like trusting people to just stop having sugar in their diet.

It has to be top down.

Revenue neutral helps a bit.

and what difference will it make?

what difference will it make if Canada cuts down 50%. How about 100%. What difference will it make in world production?

True story. We had a telephone tax that, in the law that imposed it, stated explicitly that it was to pay for the costs of conducting the Spanish-American war (four months in 1898).

We partially repealed it in 2006. Still haven't fully repealed it.

You people are idiots, y'know? Call it a damn bellybutton tax, you're still gonna pay it.

When they go to the UN, they have more influence on others to reduce their emissions.

It's not.

Countries pay attention.

Especially when you can say you've found a way to reduce emissions and benefit your economy.

Oh? When is that happening?

and BTW, the u.s., India, russia and China don't give a rats a$$ about how much co2 we do or do not produce.
