Alberta to lead in GDP growth for next 2 years, TD forecasts

Alberta's economy — in a tailspin since the 2014 crash in oil prices and the Fort McMurray fires earlier this year — will lead the country in GDP growth in 2017 and 2018, Toronto-Dominion Bank predicts.

"The good news for Alberta is that the worst is in the rear-view mirror," says a new report from TD Economics.

"With oil production having been restored by July, and reconstruction efforts having already begun, the second half of the year promises to be better."

Yes, oil is rebounding and Wynn has tanked Ontario. Even in SPITE of Notley and Trudeau, Alberta may do better now that Oil Revenues can increase.

Thanks for proving you can't blame Notley, Trudeau or Wynne.

For Ontario, I certainly can and do blame Wynn. Notley made a bad recession worse and certainly will mute the gains her province could have made with an oil recovery.

Trudeau will cause us all pains in the future once the size of his reckless spending and fiscal mismanagement become more pronounced. He is not responsible for this uptick. Nor was he or Harper responsible for the decline in the price of oil. Should he add a zillion more "carbon" taxes, he will also be slowing and restricting any economic gains.

It is laughable to believe this is a truthful assessment. Nutley was praising the gains in the construction industry just the other day which would really be declining if it wasn't for the need to rebuild Ft Mac. Of course the stupid c^nt made out like it was her government policy that made it happen not the fact the town burned down. There has been an increase in oil prices but there is yet to be any significant change in the patch. Many companies like Husky and Shell that pulled out billions in investment when the NDP gained power have no plans to return under the current government meaning those 100,000 jobs will not come back.

Let's also remember it wasn't too long ago the banks predicted much higher interest rates and a stronger dollar so we cannot really trust what they say.

Also most of these people who are publishing reports are actually hoping to influence the 'thinking' on the street to push the market in one way or the other which will obviously benefit the person publishing the report.

ON is still $25,000 behind AB in GDP per capita. Now it will be back to $30K.

Hooray!

Good.I hope that Albertans can put their lives back together, again.

They never were broken.

I can't remember who said, "an economist is someone who will explain tomorrow why what he predicted yesterday didn't happen today". I think it was Dr. Lawrence J Peter, but I could be wrong.

I fail to see how Notley made the Alberta recession worse. What data are you using if any to support this claim or are you just making it up? As for Trudeau's deficit it has yet to match the record deficits of his predecessor, most of which were created by reducing revenues through tax breaks to the wealthy.

Oh of course...tax breaks for the wealthy....

You do realize that me saving 2% of $75-80,000 still means I pay 5 times what the average person does and $75-80,000 more than 20% of the population

"Just eight months before Alberta's new carbon tax takes effect, the provincial government still has to iron out how some key pieces of the new program will work.

The Climate Leadership Plan, which launches January 1, 2017, will create widespread change in the province far beyond having to pay a little extra at the pumps.

'At $30 a tonne, there is Alberta and British Columbia at the top. Nowhere else in North America will come close'

The recent Alberta budget provided some new details, including who is exempt from the tax and what the financial impact will be for the average Albertan. Still, some significant details are unknown with ***billions of dollars*** in the balance.

Rachel Notley does remarkably well in face of unrelenting campaign of vilification. Sun newspapers? Not so much.

Notwithstanding a flagging economy and an unprecedented campaign of continual vilification by mass media, Astro-Turf agitators, corporate-bankrolled think tanks, right-wing academics and a nearly hysterical online conservative rage machine, Alberta Premier Rachel Notley's level of support among Albertans remains statistically unchanged since last February.

Given the intensity and fury of the unrelenting media campaign against her, Notley's stubborn ability to retain the approval of about a third of the Alberta electorate must be deeply frustrating and worrying to the powerful and well-financed groups campaigning to bring her and her New Democratic Party government down.

This is not to say they won't ultimately succeed, of course. Any sitting government wears the performance of the economy while it is in office, no matter what the reasons, so even with honest media coverage, the New Democrats would have an uphill fight. Moreover, this is a survey of nine premiers' personal approval and disapproval ratings, not those of their parties.

Still, these results from the Angus Reid Institute's always entertaining quarterly survey of approval and disapproval levels of nine of Canada's provincial premiers do suggest that mainstream media power and credibility continue to wane gradually and that Notley herself is a remarkable and talented politician capable of making the best of even the worst of times.

Mentalfloss, aren't you the slightest bit embarrassed that your enlightened ways have failed to produce more GDP than a struggling Alberta?

Whether you view yourself right of center or left of center, there is really no denying that the Dippers have been a disaster in Alberta for no other reason then their lack of experience.

Well, I've yet to see an improvement anywhere here; bankruptcies are increasing; people are hurting and come January, whatever carbon tax they have planned, everything will be affected so those who are hurting now will only hurt worse; those who are simply managing, won't be able to manage and those of us who are still able to survive will only end up spending less because the government is taking more.

Government leaders keep telling everyone how they'll create jobs but the fact of the matter is, they can only create the conditions to encourage businesses to create jobs. The only jobs that they can "create" are public service sector jobs and you know who expensive that is. Taxing higher earners and businesses to death will not create the so-called jobs they talk about which results in businesses closing or leaving the province. That's something the NDP simply do not understand.

JMHO

BTW me thinks that the TD report is wishful thinking. Heard the other day that it'll be AT LEAST 3 years if not longer before the Alberta economy strengthens so who do you believe?
