I'm not a big fan of free trade, but conservatives absolutely loved all of Harper's failed attempts at it so I guess we should give them a chance enjoy the party.

The good news is that they all became Liberals and care about human rights now.

Chinese premier, Trudeau announce exploratory free trade talks

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday exploratory talks on free trade will begin between Canada and China — with the goal of doubling trade between the two countries by 2020 — but a proposed extradition treaty is continuing to raise human rights concerns.

Among the bilateral agreements on economic issues signed today was a four-year deal allowing for Canadian canola to continue to be exported to China, a trade worth $2 billion, and the resumption of Chinese imports of bone-in beef from Canadian cattle over 30 months of age.

Trudeau touted Canada and China's "renewed" relationship, which would allow for "honest, regular engagement" on issues that were important and perhaps the source of disagreement between the two countries.

The Liberals have always support free trade since back in the days of Laurier. Briefly they pretended they were against NAFTA to get elected, but they really weren't.

Talks are a long, long way from a signed contract. Those are going to Russia and Iran almost exclusively.

Here's a really good free trade deal. Everyone with a diploma in East Indian cookery is given a Canadian work and business visa for life. He just shows his diploma at the port of entry, we give him the visa. Done.

Then Canada would have cuisine to write home about!

Oh, Sichuan too!

I'm for fair trade.

Expecting Afghanistan to adopt a 15/hour minimum wage is ludicrous!

The best part about free trade is that the poorer country benefits the most from it in the long term.

It always surprises me when socialists oppose free trade and then pretend they support the redistribution of wealth.

Here's what I could see as an initial free trade arrangement between Canada and China. Certain self-employed sole traders and worker cooperatives can import tariff-free. Some exceptions: certain weapons and other prohibited businesses.

They get our resources and we get buried in cheap, plastic chachkas. What could be better?
