11 candidates vying to replace Liberal Bas Balkissoon, who resigned last March

Progressive Conservative candidate Raymond Cho is widening his lead in the Scarborough-Rouge River provincial byelection, held to replace former Liberal MPP Bas Balkissoon, with more than a quarter of the 234 polls reporting.

He now leads by a margin of almost 900 votes.

Eleven candidates are running in the Toronto riding, which has been a Liberal stronghold since its creation in 1999. They include Piragal Thiru for the Liberal Party; Raymond Cho for the Progressive Conservatives and Neethan Shan for the NDP.

figured flossy woulda posted the results, but oh well.

According to Elections Ontario, Cho had 9,693 votes (38.6%), to Thiru's 7,264 votes (28.9%), Shan came third with 6,883 votes (27.4%). Voter turnout was 28.14%.

The Tory win is a breakthrough that gives PC leader Patrick Brown’s party an MPP in Toronto — the first time since Doug Holyday won Etobicoke-Lakeshore in a 2013 byelection. It’s also a blow to Premier Kathleen Wynne — the Liberals have held the riding since its creation in 1999.

“The party’s over Kathleen,” Cho’s campaign co-chairman Doug Ford proclaimed shortly after the win.
