Federal, Ontario Liberals to sign $1.49B transit funding agreement

The federal treasury is set to crack open its coffers and begin distributing $1.49 billion worth of transit funding among cities in Ontario for track upgrades, new buses, shelters and upgrades to stations.

The details being announced Tuesday will outline $688 million worth of projects in five Ontario cities that are lined up to be the first recipients of the dedicated transit funding.

The federal funds can be used against up to half the costs of eligible projects; the funding is retroactive to April 1 to cover any costs cities and provinces have incurred since then.

About $500 million of the projects being announced Tuesday will be in Toronto, with Ottawa next on the list at $156 million.

The cropped portion....

The money is part of the first phase of a $60-billion infrastructure funding plan to pay for projects nationwide over the next 10 years.

Alright, a lot of money so people that have no place to go, or reason, can now do it on smoother rails and less graffiti along the way and cameras at the stops as well as on the buses, etc. Be better off spending that on upgrading the rails going west at least then there is a destination.

It is being spent in the West. The majority of that $60B was earmarked under Harper's ActionPlan.

Woah.

Huge list of infrastructure projects coming up.

Thanks Trudeau!!!!

The Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario have reached a bilateral agreement that will provide more than $2.97 billion in combined funding for projects that will reduce commute times and make public transit more efficient and inclusive for people in the province.

The Government of Canada is providing Ontario with $1,486,680,000 under the new Public Transit Infrastructure Fund, and will cover up to 50 per cent of the funding needed for projects supported under this agreement.

To reach this agreement, projects representing a significant portion of the total federal funding for transit needed to be identified. The following projects have been approved for federal funding amounting to $688,745,733 to date. With the agreement now in place, all eligible communities will be invited to nominate projects for funding beginning in early September.

Definitely not.

I wonder why it took ON so long to get Fed money for transit?

BC has been sucking the Fed transit teat for decades.

Without it there would be no roads in BC as it is too expensive to construct.maintain them considering the minimal return. The waterways should be the next *** they start sucking on if the road thing is wearing thin.

BC is like Ontario and Quebec.

They're the only provinces that actually pay their fair share.
