Ontario facing ‘epidemic of Islamophobia’ survey finds

While Canada rides a wave of global praise for welcoming Syrian refugees, a new poll suggests we’re also facing a wave of something sinister — Islamophobia.

The survey by polling firm MARU/VCR&C measured public perceptions of ethnicity and immigration in Ontario in the wake of the recent influx of thousands of Syrian refugees — almost 12,000 to this province alone.

“There is an epidemic of Islamophobia in Ontario. Only a third of Ontarians have a positive impression of the religion and more than half feel its mainstream doctrines promote violence (an anomaly compared to other religions),” said the 51-page survey to be released this week by the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants and advocacy group Mass Minority. “These sentiments are echoed with Syrian refugees in Ontario where acceptance often coincides with acceptance of Islam.”

Ontario has seen a number of recent incidents targeting Muslims. A woman wearing a hijab was attacked at a supermarket in London in June and a Western University student from Iran was beaten by two men who taunted him and told him to go back to his country. Also, in June, an anti-immigrant group rooted in Germany held an anti-Muslim protest in Toronto.

While the survey’s respondents agreed that immigrants play a valuable role in society (72 per cent) and are an important part of our cultural identity (71 per cent), three-quarters of the survey participants said we need to focus on taking care of the people “here” instead of spending resources on refugees.

“Taken together, this suggests that Ontarians see non-immigrants as more entitled to social care. This entitlement is, in some ways, a contradiction given the inherent value that immigration offers,” said the poll of 1,009 Ontarians conducted between May 11 and 16.

The survey was funded by the province and the City of Toronto for its recently launched public awareness campaign on Islamophobia, which has sparked heated debate over its provocative posters, seen by some as reinforcing stereotypes and fuelling tensions.

The research was commissioned to take a snapshot of Ontario residents’ attitudes and perception towards immigrants and ethnic minorities as a benchmark to assess the effectiveness of the multimedia campaign. A followup survey is planned after 12 months.

Probably would get the same result if you asked about the murdering and terrorizing Mennonites running around the roads where I live with their horses and buggies.

I keep seeing squeeze-squeeze-squeeze - despite every word of sunshine and rainbows Princess Pinwheel and Company blow up our backsides. I see people being driven into destitution - yet hear of improving economies. I hear suicide among remote residents being blamed on hopelessness by the very people who impose that hopelessness. I recall hearing Wynne's words: "we'll have to make some difficult decisions" - now we're at the point of assisted suicide (but don't worry. Ontario will tax you - even in death)

Islamophobia is a matter of ignorance, as this image shows. The media has created this situation by demonizing Arabs so that we support bombing the crap out of their countries, which in turn precipitated the immigrant crisis. We created this crisis and now we resist helping those we made homeless. Must be a first world problem, me thinks.

In western countries many people get attacked by right wing extremists for using Arabic languages.Bigots think only Muslims use the word "Allah" to refer their God but those bigots didn't know even Arab Christians use the word "Allah". Because in Arabic Allah means God.

Oh look! Our very own first world problem showed up to voice his disapproval. Wally....

Yes it is. The ignorance of the progtards who think it's racist to criticize the religion. It's a made up word, made up by Muslims and run with by the progtards to try and gain sympathy from the West despite the fact that Muslims in the West are BY FAR the least persecuted group. And in fact, they have been largely responsible for the rise in religious persecution in the West.
According to FBI stats, in the US you are far more likely to be the victim of persecution or a hate crime if you are Jewish, Christian, a member of the LGBTQ community, White, Black, Hispanic and then way down the line come Muslims. Hate crimes reported against Muslims make up 1.3% of the US total of reported hate crimes. However, it's also been well established that at least 20% of the claims of hate crimes against Muslims are 100% bullsh*t.

People suggesting we take care of the people of Canada before bringing in any more people are not "Islamophobic" , hell they're not even racist. They've cottoned to the fact that neither Ontario nor Canada has unlimited financial resources. Something our idiot leaders haven't figured out yet.

On top of that, let me ask you a question. I'm going to assume you like Smarties (if not, insert a treat a you do like). Now, if I offered you 25,000 Smarties BUT, 25 of those Smarties are poisonous and will kill you if you eat them, and there's no way to tell which ones are which, would you still take the Smarties?

You don't believe we should focus on caring for people here either.

Not true. Careing for people that can not help themselves is not the same as giving money to worthless freeloaders. and even at that there is not enough money available to look after the productive members of society and give the non productive everything they might want or someone on a mission wants for them.

It would be interesting to see the questions that led to that rather dubious conclusion. Like do you hate muslims or do you hate muslim terrorists. Big difference.
