NDP Speaker caught in lie, says he didn't know about the ruling he himself read out in the AB Legislature?
Quite a scene yesterday in the Alberta legislature as PC leader Ric McIver was tossed out by the Speaker:
Here’s the story:
It all started when interim PC leader Ric McIver introduced his anticipated motion to “protect parental choice” when it comes to education.
The NDP introduced an amendment, which Robyn Luff said would make the motion read:
“Be it resolved that the legislative assembly urge the government to support public education including francophone and separate schools, while affirming its commitment to allowing parents the choice of education delivery for their children, including home, charter and private education programs in such instances where they offer alternatives not available in the public system.”
PC MLA Richard Starke claimed the last part drastically changed the intent of his motion, also saying the amendment was out of order.
House Speaker Bob Wanner eventually ruled the amendment acceptable, but not before a written decision was handed out.
So it would seem as though McIver has a point here: how could he have a written ruling in his hand before the amendment was even debated? The NDP introduced an amendment, which Robyn Luff said would make the motion read:

The Speaker insists that he had no prior knowledge of the amendment and says he was handed the same document McIver was handed at pretty much the same moment. So how does that happen? We deserve some further explanation here. Whatever one might think about the motion itself, we should be concerned about the appearance that the Speaker is doing the political bidding of the government.
