With that cruise ship getting ready to go from Alaska to New York state though the NW passage and our ability for ship building a mess, does Canada even have the capabilities to maintain a significant presence in our Arctic Archipelago as it becomes more accessible in the future? We have people willing to learn and work anywhere at this point, but no system or plan in place to work towards the eventual opening of the NW to the world. Were going to loose it if we cant show we can hold onto it.

WHy would we want to guarantee the safety of a ship of fools? it is not the taxpayers responsibility to protect foreigners from themselves.

If the passage becomes international then there is no stopping ships. But what happens when people get ignorant and deviate out of the passage into our waters. If we don't have the capacity to at least police our adjacent waterways then someone else will.

... Then we detain the vessel and treat them like we do the people smugglers and arrest the captain/crew and confiscate the boat and contents, or, if they deviate and get into trouble, well, for a fee, we can pull their fat outta the fire

We at this time can't garuntee in a timely fashion a reasonable response to that stupidity. But other countries can... Watch in the future were going to agree to some stupid deal that splits our administrative duties with other countries.

The only country in the world capable of launching a seaborne rescue in the Northwest Passage would be the Russians with their fleet of big, nuclear powered ice breakers. The Americans could rescue passengers by air but not by sea.

They should wait a few years and then it could be an ice road for that route, Zamboni Highway was the name in the lead.

Great route for ice artists to show their work.

Why would cruiseships be sailing in winter?
I'm not sure if wind powered would be the best option here. If it was an ice road sails might have some value.

There's a cruise ship planning to go in August. The ball is moving forward.... Canada is back peddling it seems

As I heard. I'd assume the obvious liabilities enforced by their insurance company require above average self rescue and required accoutrements to sustain life for the time required for Canadian SAR operations.

You can bet your @ss that insurance company will be billed heavy for such a happenstance by the Government.
