Last night there was a provincial by-election in Alberta, in the riding of Calgary Greenway, and for this campaign, Notley’s NDP pulled out all the stops.

First, they mimicked an illegal scheme tried by the Ottawa NDP, where they diverted funds meant for constituency offices for sitting politicians, and turned them into campaign offices.

Then Rachel Notley called a snap election, before the other parties had nominated their candidates.

But it didn’t help. Their candidate, Roop Rai, came in fourth, with just 20% of the vote. It’s been less than a year since Notley’s sweeping election, but the NDP vote plummeted from 32% to 20%.

The PC candidate, Prab Gill, won with 28% — enough to win a four-way race.

I don’t like the fact that Gill won; as our own Sheila Gunn Reid revealed, Gill is hardly a conservative. Just a few months ago, he was as giddy as a schoolgirl in his support of Justin Trudeau.

But let’s not quibble. The NDP is back to what it was, a fringe party.

Our job now is simple: to mitigate the damage Notley and her destroyers do to Alberta over the next three years.

Hardly a fringe party yet if the winning candidate only got 28%. The article, by a notoriously right wing website, fails to mention that the PC share of the vote dropped by a margin similar to the NDP from 42 to 28, hardly a stunning endorsement. The party that should really be smiling is the Liberals who went from zero (since they did not have a candidate in the last election) to 22%.

Also, the Liberals are the new NDP

I had a great laugh when I heard the news this morning that the Dippers got their butts handed to them so handily.

... Notley added in additional comic relief by commenting that the results reflected that the electorate thinks that jobs are important..... Goes to show exactly how out of touch the Dippers really are

Didn't read my post did you? Just to recap, the PC vote was down - the Liberal vote went up by 22%. Just another example of the right wing trying to put the best face on a situation that did not turn out as well as it did in the May 2015 election.

Generally speaking, I try not to wade through your posts.... Far to ideologically motivated such that there are no elements of reality within.

In the final analysis, the fact is that the party in power was given a harsh message of disapproval. As for the PCs, that right-of-center vote was split with the Wildrose Party, so in reality, the electorate in that riding has clearly voted against Notley's brand of socialism.

... Even more unhappy news for ya'll when you look at it that way

Then I guess by your own logic that means the PCs were given an even harsher message since they dropped from 42% of the vote to only 28. And the Liberals must be on the move, jumping from zero to 22%. As much as you try to twist the figures this wasn't really a message to the NDP; not when this was a supposedly a solid PC riding.

Up...down...doesn't matter, PC won the seat and that is what counts. I can guarantee you that if a general election was called here tomorrow the NDP would be lucky to get a few token seats. The mood here in Alberta right now is more like a lynch mob of 1.5 million people trying to get Notley's head in the noose. People here do not want to wait for another 3 years of NDP policy killing jobs and the economy not just at home but trashing the province on a global scale.

So BS you just keep looking for the little things through your rose colored glasses and do not take any notice of the huge swing in support for this govt. I would bet their approval rating is in single digit territory outside of a couple of ridings in the city. I mean there is a serious grassroots movement not just to remove the NDP from govt but to remove Notley's head from her shoulders. When a politician is so hated for their policy that people seriously want them dead it may be an indicator they are not doing the will of the electorate and their policies are having huge negative impact on most of the citizens.

The Provincial NDP will be destroyed in the next Alberta Election. I'd bet my house on it.

If you live in Alberta you will be betting your house on it.

I'm just hoping to still have a house to bet when the next cycle comes round. Of course I could have half a dozen by then because of all the foreclosure auctions starting soon because the stupid b*tch has killed everyone's jobs. It's gonna look like 2008 in the USA here soon with beautiful homes selling for less than $100k due to 1000s of foreclosures being on the market.

Bottom falling out of oil had nothing to do with it? A shot of reality might be a good thing for that sort of rabies

This province has survived the 'boom-bust' cycle before and it could easily do it again if the NDP weren't hellbent on kicking the industry while it's down. The best indicator is that while our economy is tanking our neighbors in the next province (Sask) are booming. It's not like they can sell their resources for more it is simply govt policy being set in a way to allow prosperity instead of chase businesses (that means employers and jobs for you NDP types) and investment to other places. Reality is the only rabid thing going on here is the NDP trying to dismantle our economy and the top industries as fast as possible while making all their buddies rich through outrageous consulting fees and lucrative govt jobs that this province hasn't needed or had in the last 100 years.

On a personal level if I met Notley it would be very difficult for me to restrain the urge to punch her in the mouth then kick her hard in the c*nt while she's down. The clueless waste of sperm seems to think that winning an election due to anger with the opposition's leader is NOT a mandate from the masses to turn Alberta into a debt-ridden NDP cesspool of outrageous taxation to pay for govt employees and unions.

... The Dipper brain-trust increasing personal and corp taxes at at time when the bottom had already been out for a year wasn't exactly a smart move.

As was mentioned, the boom-bust cycles have been around numerous times, but the abject stupidity of the provincial gvt was a first this time
