OTTAWA -- The Liberal government is seeking a record number of new immigrants this year by increasing spaces available for family reunification and refugee resettlement.
Between 280,000 and 305,000 new permanent residents will be admitted, a range that's the highest projected level in decades.
Immigration Minister John McCallum said the plan is grounded in Canada's tradition of being a welcoming and generous country.
"It outlines a significant shift in immigration policy towards reuniting more families, building our economy and upholding Canada's humanitarian traditions to resettle refugees and offer protection to those in need," he said at a news conference in Brampton, Ont.
Fewer spaces will be available to immigrants seeking to come for work, though McCallum said the high target mark of 162,400 people in economic programs is in line with admissions in recent years, even if the target itself is lower.
The refugee program will see the biggest boost.
In addition to the 25,000 Syrians the government has committed to resettling, it is prepared to triple the number of privately sponsored refugees this year, setting aside up to 18,000 spaces for them. In previous years, the number hovered around 6,000.
The Liberals are also opening up thousands of new spots in the family class programs, mostly for spouses and children.
While they are increasing the number of applications they'll accept for the popular parent and grandparent visa, they aren't raising the number of admissions in that program, as they continue to whittle away at a massive backlog.
But McCallum says more resources will be devoted to getting wait times down for many immigration programs, saying the government will draw a lesson from how fast it managed to get through the Syrian refugee applications.
Each November, the government is required to table a document in the House of Commons laying out how many new permanent residents it intends to accept in the coming year. The plan for 2016 was delayed by the October federal election.
A look at the Liberal government's immigration plan, by the numbers
The Liberal government released its plan Tuesday for how many new permanent residents they will seek to welcome to Canada in 2016.
The program is divided into three general streams -- economic, family and humanitarian -- and the Liberals say their plan represents a shift toward the latter two categories.
Overall, they're looking to increase the maximum by about 20,000 more people than the previous Conservative government had aimed for last year.
Here is a look at the Liberal plan and how it stacks up against previous ones, by the numbers:

How are we going to support another 300,000 immigrants and refugees this year . When we are having trouble handling some of the needs of the 25,000 that came this year. That is 12 times this year's number.
I don't give a rat's a** if we are supposed to be a "welcoming and generous country".
There are limits.

The people making these decisions to buy voteres are not the ones paying the bills. There is a rumor going around that some of you still had money left over in your paycheques after taxes. And some paid no tax at all.Obviously these types of people are not doing their fair share in helping the Liberal party buy voters.

At the rate the refugees are coming in we soon won't have to support them. They will take over the country, our assets, kill those who will not convert to Islam and that will be that!
Bobblehead McCallum and his cronies are insane! Whoever has this 'refugee migration' in control around the world has a firm grip on the world leaders.

Those boys (and girls) are slow learners! What's hard to understand about "there is no accommodation for them"?

If peace comes to Syria and the refugees are housed there would the money still be made available to boost the Canadian economy, make it a 100 year loan.

300,000 ... How many more is that than we usually let in? It's probably close to the recent norm.

Most of those one have gunpowder residue on their hands. Mini boom for Canadians and the goods are to stay in Canada. 3M refugees around James Bay (take the pressure off the EU) using technologies that will still be green 100 years down the road. Over that 100 years they develop what industries they can using local resources as much as possible once the community is up and running. Send the bill to the war crimes court so it can be added to any judgments that get handed down. The battle then would be to convince them to stay rather than go back home and do something similar there.

Yeah. Back in the old days when men were men, we let 4,000 SS officers settle in Canada. Obviously, our standards are slipping, letting in all of these schweinhund untermenchen.

Better that one isolated area in the back woods of Canada take the hit rather than seeing all of western Europe collapse. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be chipping in as far as getting the housing up and the heat on before the bodies start arriving. Lots of time for classes in the winter. so Igloos with tunnels to other Igloos might want to be included in the basic plan. Sail cloth type of material lasts 20 years, plastic faced fiberboard with asbestos in it lasts 200 years and is 1/10 the price and the mine is 'close' and the pressing could be done on site so exposure is eliminated. Used in other forms it is still an insulator so any heat created tends to stay inside. Sand-which boards could be built with a high R-value to justify using that 'dangerous material'. Make the sacrifice and do it efficiently you might even make money at it 20 years down the road.

How many extra straws did it take to break the camel's back?

2016 is the same increase from 2015 as 2015 from 2014. Looks like a normal pattern. I believe we are underpopulated so we need immigration. Note that about 1/2 the total are economic immigrants meaning those that come with money or ability to be immediately employed.

Almost all of us originate somewhere else. I'm sure that we call consider ourselves to be the best type of immigrants.
