The founder of massive mining company, Barrick Gold Corp., has signed a compliance agreement with Elections Canada after he admitted to contributing nearly twice the legal limit to the Conservative Party of Canada over three different years. He made illegal political donations to riding associations represented by Conservative ministers, and for a Conservative candidate.

Peter Munk made the illegal donations in 2008, 2010, and 2012. He retired as the chairperson of the company's board in 2014 and, around a year later, Barrick Gold Corp. hired The Honourable John Baird PC, the former Conservative Minister of Foreign Affairs, as an advisor on international issues.

Having now entered into a compliance agreement with Elections Canada, Mr. Munk has agreed to comply with the Canada Elections Act rules for political donations in the future and, in turn, the Commissioner of Canada Elections shall not refer the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions. If Mr. Munk breaches the agreement, the commissioner can refer the matter for charges.
