Citizens for a Canadian Republic

Citizens for a Canadian Republic, a non-partisan, not-for-profit Canadian corporation, believes it is time for Canada to become a parliamentary republic with a resident, democratically selected Canadian as head of state, instead of a non-resident, hereditary monarch.

We believe this goal can be achieved without compromising our heritage, parliamentary traditions or our membership in the Commonwealth, where most nations are already republics.

Presently, Canada is a constitutional monarchy. It shares its unelected, hereditary head of state, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, with that country and fourteen other former British colonies. In Canada, the Governor General is the representative of the Queen and acts in her name on the advice of Parliament. Therefore, in practice, the Queen is Canada's 'official' head of state, while the Governor General is our 'acting' head of state.

The Prime Minister is the head of government.

By definition, a republic is a government without a monarch as head of state.

It's the Communist Chinese star at the top that is off-putting.

I suppose that it works for Vancouver.

Once the Queen passes away or becomes unable to reign, there will be major changes in the Commonwealth. There is little doubt that it will dissolve. The reason the monarchy is so strong is because of the popularity she has. There is no way Charles would be able to approach her political savy.

Let's make him the banker also and have his picture and address at every post office, just as incentive to be honest and his income is $1 more that poverty level, just so poverty is the first thing on the list of what to eliminate.

There is no way Charles would be able to approach her political savy.
He'll be dead before she is, one of his surviving sons is the next in line.

Quebec will block the end of the Monarchy just to be ornery.

What a load of bullsh*t. The fact is, the Queen is the titular head of Canada and nothing more, occasionally presiding over some ceremonial crap. The only time the Queen can actually act on behalf of Canada insofar as policy goes is when she is petitioned directly by the federal govt. And the last time that happened she declined to act. The Queen is not the least bit interested in running or ruling Canada.

I'm sure the Corbynistas love that design. Very Soviet/North Korean.

The only time the Queen can actually act on behalf of Canada insofar as policy goes is when she is petitioned directly by the federal govt.

Or when she decides to use one of the powers she has under the royal prerogative, such as dissolving the Canadian parliament; sacking a Canadian PM; calling Canadian elections; forcing Canada to declare war; issuing and withdrawing the Canadian passport to or from an individual or individuals etc etc.

All the more reason to dump the embarrassment.
