Alberta unemployment rate to surpass national average in 2016: RBC

Alberta’s unemployment rate is expected to average 6.9 per cent in 2016, exceeding the national average for the first time since 1988, RBC said Tuesday.

“Private-sector hiring has fallen sharply year-to-date in November 2015 with further weakness expected as firms continue to face cost pressures,” the bank said, noting total employment has fallen only slightly from a year ago due to public-sector hiring gains. “However, as the unsustainable pace of growth in this sector diminishes, overall employment declines are set to dominate in 2016.”

The bank said unemployment is expected to fall back to 5.7 per cent in 2017. It estimated the province’s unemployment rate will average 5.9 per cent this year, up from 4.7 per cent in 2014.

Statistics Canada’s latest figures peg Alberta’s unemployment rate at seven per cent for November, up from 4.4 per cent in November 2014.

Sorry, you'd have to go back to Chretien, Martin and Klein but Klein didn't deal directly with OPEC and PetroCanada (Fed Owned) now mostly Suncor.

As I asked before, do you need to be filled in on what you missed whiled stoned in your youth?

The sad fact is that even with fossil fuel subsidies, that market is failing miserably.

Without Subsidies they'll have to get by on Tax Credits.

You still haven't figured out how the industry works do you?

Hopefully there is a good safety net for the working folks to at least soften the blow until things get better. At least to buy them a little time. I think one of the saddest things I ever saw was a man in Greece being interviewed who had lost his job. He was about middle age. His comment that he couldn't , through no fault of his own , afford to even buy his daughter a cookie. It was a heart breaker. It all just sucks for real.

In Greece's case they had a ridiculously high debt to GDP ratio.

It will never be that bad in Alberta.
