A better economy.

Brought to you by the NDP.

Premier Rachel Notley creates new economic development ministry

Alberta Premier Rachel Notley shuffled her cabinet Thursday and created a new department to co-ordinate efforts to diversify the province's economy as it deals with massive job losses in the energy sector.

Deron Bilous takes over the new portfolio of Economic Development and Trade, which will oversee all of Alberta's international trade offices and new and existing trade initiatives.

The department will help businesses attract investment, create jobs, develop new products and reach new markets, Notley said.

"This is a unique effort for a unique time in Alberta's economic story," Notley said. "It's hard to believe, quite frankly, that we haven't had a minister dedicated to economic development and diversification since 2006. Frankly, growth used to be taken for granted. That passivity and those attitudes of entitlement end today."

A detailed plan to diversify the economy will be outlined when the government tables its first budget on Tuesday, Notley said, though she declined to answer questions about any specifics of that plan.

Alberta's only other industry is agriculture. Being a land-locked Province, they are not into manufacturing; no means of transport except overland.
The Federal ; Government has done such a hatchet job on beef and produce marketing, there isn't much hope for Alberta's economy.
The Provinces economies are imploding, one at a time. Watch Canada go tits up and turn into a third world country.

They've always had a diverse economy that goes beyond autos and auto parts. Whoever decided to all their eggs in auto parts f-cked up big time. Some green schmucks killed lumber and paper, America and Japan killed the beef industry. Oil has handy to have after the auto industry packed it in just after the millennium.

There's a pretty decent mgh sector here that is producing oilfield equipment, etc... Very busy now with the low CAD.

Kind of a shame that other provinces like Ontario don't have a mfg sector that can take advantage of this circumstance

Canada become a 3rd world country, I think not. There are some areas in the larger cities I agree look like slums, however unlike 3rd world countries, Canadian ghettos have indoor plumbing and electricity.

"The findings of the report by CBC (Conference Board of Canada) state a direct relationship between the nation’s prosperity in areas like business, culture, research and global commerce and immigration in Canada."

Which ought to surprise no one considering that Canada's currently rated as being/having:

-The world's best advanced economy.
-The world's soundest banking system.
-The world's top country brand-rating.
-The world's most tolerant nation.
-The world's most multicultural society.
-The world leader in educational attainment.
-The highest quality of life in the G7 and 2nd highest in the OECD.
-The safest G7 nation to live in.
-The G7's most fairly-administered judicial system.
-The G7 leader in providing equal opportunities for individuals.
-The only G7 nation fully recovered from the global financial crisis & recession.
-The world's best country for business.
-The strongest fiscal position of all G‑7 nations.
-The best G7 nation for business over the next 5 years.

In other words: the opposite of a 3rd World country and no indications of becoming one.
Quite the opposite in fact:

-One of the world's 10 happiest countries.
-One of the world's 10 least corrupt nations.

I agree with all you say. Canada is the best of almost everything and most of what it is 'best' in has been brought about by the Conservatives under Harper.
However I don't believe it will stay this way.
Your points4,5,6,8, and 9 are already beginning to take a toll on our greatness. Those areas will deteriorate more in the future and Trudeau's 'Kumbaya' policies will escalate them.

Point 4: tolerance - the reckless admission of refugees and immigrants will erode the tolerance
Point 5"Multiculturism - The influx of refugees and immigrants is largely Muslim; incompatible with our Constitution.. Our choices concerning Islamic culture are 1)look the other way and allow them to carry on with Sharia law, honor killings, forced marriages, and other barbaric practices OR 2) Prosecute them when they break the laws of the land and thereby burden the judicial system and jails.
Point 6:educational attainment - Our educational system is already breaking down. All subjects such as math, English, history, etc. have been scrapped and replaced with technological data. Teachers striking, top heavy administration.
Point 8- Safety: The armed forces will be depleted under Trudeau's government, no participation in fighting for world peace, soft sentences for domestic terrorists. Our safety will be gone.
Point 9: Fairly administered justice - Not so! Criminals are getting off easy and will get off easier in the future partly because our prison system has not been updated and because the Liberals are generally soft on crime.

The people who wanted change should have been thinking seriously about changing our systems before they voted for change. Canada, as you say, is good the way it is. Who knows what 'change' will bring? I fear it will not be good!

Alberta has been "diversifying its economy" since I moved here in 78

It's been a guise under other administrations because those platforms relied on dirty oil.

Now that fossil fuels are becoming an extinct market, Alberta is relying on a legit government to make the transition to renewables a real one.
