Danny Williams says Stephen Harper's tactics are borderline racist

Former Newfoundland and Labrador premier Danny Williams says some of the tactics of Conservative Leader Stephen Harper are borderline racist.

Williams, who led a Progressive Conservative government in Canada's most easterly province from 2003 to 2010, launched his latest scathing attack against Harper and the Conservative Party of Canada on Sunday during an interview with CBC News.

He used the word racism in reference to the debate over the wearing of the niqab by Muslim women taking part in the oath of citizenship.

Williams said the issue is not worthy of becoming a national issue, but the Conservatives have latched onto it in order to secure votes.

"He doesn't care if he isolates the issues of women or if he isolates the issue of minorities, and even crosses, possibly, that racism line," Williams stated.

"It doesn't matter to him. It's all about getting elected at the end of the day."

Harper, Conservatives are "racist"? Then explain these immigration stats

This weekk, CBC engaged in this kind of drive by smear, and it wasn’t on one of their political programs. It wasn’t on a comedy show. It was on The National.

In a segment on talking to voters about the election, CBC found a young woman who is voting for the first time.

This young woman, an immigrant from Venezuela, says Canada isn’t welcoming to immigrants anymore, and that's the fault of the current government.

This woman only came to Canada in 2010. She is already a citizen, she can vote already, in just five years.

In 2010 Canada accepted 280,687 new permanent residents, the highest number in history. That figure doesn't even include foreign students and workers.

Immigration settlement spending is also up, to almost $1 billion a year.

When my parents came to Canada, the country welcomed you but they didn’t spend piles of money to help you fit in.

Now we spend a ton of money, but the Harper government isn’t welcoming of immigrants?

Next progressives will say: Harper and the Conservatives only like white immigrants.

China, India and the Philippines are the top three source countries for Canada. Those places aren’t predominantly white, not even close.

Then we hear that Harper hates Muslims.

But the Muslim population in Canada more than doubled between the 2001 and 2011 census takings.

I’m tired off this false narrative going unchallenged.

Then explain, with all the important issues facing this country, does Harper choose to make this non-issue the main platform of his campaign? We know it has nothing to do with racism and everything to do with avoiding the real issues. It is a snow job, appealing to emotion instead of logic. Why is he afraid to face the truth of his failure as a PM?
