The annual salary paid to Alberta provincial court judges will jump $30,000 by next year under a new four-year deal awarded by an independent judicial compensation panel. Judges currently earning $263,731 will see their salary bumped next April to $293,991, on par with Ontario as the highest in the country.

The retroactive four-year deal, approved by cabinet Tuesday, gives judges a 3.5 per cent increase in 2013, and 2.5 per cent increases in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Judges were also seeking a seventh and eighth week of vacation, but that was rejected by the commission. However, part-time judges saw their professional development allowance raised to $3,750 per year, up from $1,875.

But, but, but. The deal was deal awarded by an independent judicial compensation panel.

Next question. Who else's pay raises are linked to these 'independently' awarded pay raises?
