Inb4 it's all the Liberals fault red herring.

Dean Del Mastro sentenced to 1 month in jail, 4 months house arrest for election overspending

Former Conservative MP Dean Del Mastro has been sentenced to one month in jail, followed by four months house arrest, for violating the Elections Act in 2008.

A judge in Peterborough delivered the sentence Thursday, which also includes 18 months probation.

Del Mastro has filed an appeal of his October conviction. He's expected to ask for bail pending the outcome of that appeal.

The former MP was found to have exceeded spending limits, failed to report a personal contribution of $21,000 to his campaign, and knowingly submitted a falsified document.

On his way into court Thursday, Del Mastro was asked if he's prepared to serve time.

Del Mastro told reporters Thursday he's "prepared to do whatever is necessary to stand for the truth." (Sean Kilpatrick/Canadian Press)

"I'm prepared to do whatever is necessary to stand for the truth," he told reporters.

Del Mastro, 44, was once Prime Minister Stephen Harper's point man defending the Tories against allegations of electoral fraud. He maintained his innocence and called the verdict the judge's opinion.

Nice to see a conviction here this guy thought he was free and was shocked
he was actually going to be punished like any other citizen would be good for
the judge its is about time. Harper is proving to have more bad apples than
Grant Divine did years ago in Saskatchewan. Remember how these folks were
going to clean up Ottawa? So much for that.

Former Peterborough MP Dean Del Mastro got off far too easily when he was sentenced to a month in jail for election spending fraud, says the Crown in a new court document - so the Crown will argue at appeal for nine to 12 months in jail instead.

Del Mastro is now free on bail pending his own appeal. He served one night in the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay in June after he was sentenced to 30 days in prison followed by four months of house arrest and 18 months probation.

Madam Justice Lisa Cameron meted out the sentence after she convicted him of having overspent on his 2008 election campaign and of having taken steps to cover it up.

In the document, Crown attorneys Croft Michaelson and Brendan Gluckman argue that Del Mastro should have gotten an “exemplary sentence” to discourage any other candidate “who might be tempted to engage in similar antics in the future.”

The Crowns acknowledge that appellate courts generally defer to the sentences imposed by trial judges, “and may not simply interfere simply because they would have imposed a different sentence.”

But they argue that this is a case the sentence was “simply too low” to discourage future disregard of electoral spending rules by future candidates, and that the appellate court should reconsider it.

Meanwhile Del Mastro’s lawyer, Leo Adler, plans to argue in the appeal that the former MP should never have been sentenced to a month in jail and shouldn’t have spent even one night there.

At least none of them did anything that went against CPC values like wear a burqa while committing the crime or commit a crime that could qualify as a barbaric cultural practice. It wasn't terrorism either and the criminals weren't dual citizens. And while one friend did crack, at least he wasn't smoking pot.

All it was was a bit of electoral and financial fraud, both perfectly acceptable Western cultural practices, silly leftists.

SHould give those who scam welfare the same kind of treatment.

They'd appreciate it. I remember as a kid one winter seeing one man throw a rock through a shop window and then waiting for the cops to arrive. They did not need to touch him, let alone handcuff him. All the offer did was open the back door and the man happily slipped in without resistance. He then waived at the watching crowd through the back window as he was driven away presumably to a warm bed and a hot meal. It was his own personal police chauffeur service to the jailhouse resort.

Still letting the big fish swim away though so this is nothing to cheer about.

No kidding. She never should have been allowed to wear a burqa at the citizenship ceremony.

Had she just committed electoral or financial fraud or smoked a crack pipe or engage in serial rape and murder like Russell Williams or some other old-fashioned Western crime, we could have accepted her into the Canadian family with open arms. But for her to engage in the barbaric cultural practice of wearing a burqa at a citizenship ceremony crossed a line that should just never have been crossed.

In fact the CPC should revoke the party membership of any burqa-clad member. Shame on her!

So I can safely assume then, that when Mac Harb is properly sentenced you will also be cheering? And if he's not then of course you'll all demonstrate the appropriate amount of outrage, right?

They're not conservatives, so no.

You're kidding, right? They barely batted an eye when Joseph Fontana wouldn't step down as mayor of London.
