Justin Trudeau: Tories threaten liberty by fostering prejudice against Muslims

Liberal leader says Conservatives are playing on people's fears

The Conservative government poses a real threat to liberty in Canada and is stoking fear and prejudice by opposing the right of female Canadian Muslims to wear a niqab, Justin Trudeau says.

And Canadians, he said, should "shudder" that the government is employing the same kind of rhetoric to raise fears against Muslims that was used to promote a “none is too many” restrictive immigration policy toward Jews in the 1930s and 1940s.

"These are troubling times. Across Canada, and especially in my home province, Canadians are being encouraged by their government to be fearful of one another," the Liberal leader said in a speech in downtown Toronto Monday night.

"For me, this is both unconscionable and a real threat to Canadian liberty. For me, it is basic truth that prime ministers of liberal democracies ought not to be in the business of telling women what they can and cannot wear on their head during public ceremonies."

Trudeau, whose speech focused on the theme of liberty in Canada, was referring to the issue of Muslim women wearing the niqab, which covers their face, while taking the oath of citizenship.

Last month, a Federal Court judge ruled that the ban on people wearing face coverings while taking the oath of citizenship is unlawful.

But Prime Minister Stephen Harper denounced that decision, saying that most Canadians would consider it offensive that someone would conceal their identity at the moment they are becoming a citizen.

Harper said the government will appeal that ruling.

In his speech Monday night, Trudeau countered that people should be free to dislike the niqab, hold it up as a symbol of oppression, or convince others they shouldn’t wear one. But those who would use the state’s power to restrict women’s religious freedom and freedom of expression, he said, "indulge in the same repressive impulse that they profess to condemn."

"It is a cruel joke to claim you are liberating people from oppression by dictating in law what they can and cannot wear."

"What’s even worse than what they’re saying is what they really mean. We all know what is going on here. It is nothing less than an attempt to play on people’s fears and foster prejudice, directly toward the Muslim faith."

Trudeau also accused the government of deliberately blurring the line between real security threats and simple prejudice.

In response to Trudeau's speech, Harper spokesman Stephen Lecce said that Canada is a "beacon of freedom, an example of unity in diversity and successful model of pluralism in the world."

Regarding the niqab, Lecce repeated what Harper has said in the past, that Canadians would find it "offensive" that someone would conceal their identity while taking the citizenship oath, which is why the government is appealing the judge's decision.

I knew that you were really hurting over Justine's implosion, but I never realized how severe you believe it to be. Anytime that someone stoops to the last resort of labeling another as a Nazi, well, it's pretty clear that they have nothing left.

Too bad Flossy, this will be 3 Liberal leaders in a row to go down in flames and be shamed in front of the entire nation... Maybe next time

Trudeau is ok. Anyone is better than Harper.

Depends on what you are looking for, if it's a boxer Trudeau might be your man, if it's running a country, I'll take Harper any day- He may not be likeable but he's capable and he has some smarts. I think Duffy might be suffering with Alzheimer's ..................do they treat that in jail? :)

Angry veterans launch ‘Anybody But Conservative’ campaign to defeat Tories in upcoming election

“We need a government that will look after us veterans,” said Ron Clarke, a 36-year-veteran, in an emotional plea.
For Clarke and veterans advocate Mike Blais, the federal election can’t come soon enough.
Clarke, an advocate from Cape Breton, launched his Anybody But Conservative campaign Wednesday in hopes of a government that will treat its veterans better.
In a Parliament Hill news conference, Clarke also made a plea to serving members of the military to join the protest.

From what I hear this campaign is catching fire.

One thing that caught my eye was that Trudeau spoke for forty five minutes and never consulted any notes. There may have been a teleprompter but it never showed. Trudeau is a very accomplished speaker.....I would say better than any of his opposition.

One thing that caught my eye was when I was doing my income tax the other day, was the amount this income splitting is saving me for the 7th year in a row! An accomplished speaker doesn't do near as much for me as an accomplished doer does. Every car dealership has a few good speakers! :)

Man, you would sell your mom for a tax break. 8O :p

This is not about a few extra bucks in your pocket. Harper is a dangerous psycho with delusions of grandeur. He is secretive, controlling, manipulative and anything but transparent. He sold us out to the Chinese, he abandoned our veterans, bailed out his buddies and stuck us with the bill. He said we would not recognize Canada when he was through with it and he has kept that promise. ABC: anyone but conservative.

Sounds a lot like his father https://www.facebook.com/JustinPJTrudeau/app_142371818162

If Justin does go down in flames then the Neo-Cons will open up their warehouses and start handing out muzzles to the people as promised in the highly contentious federal Conservative Bill C-51

What the Liberals have to do quick like is deep six Jr. and find someone credible several months before the election or it will be another Socialist opposition! :)

Sorry Cliffy, we'll have to agree to disagree. He's the boss and a bit of a dictator but he knows what he's doing for the general good of the country- he's also a typical politician. If you want someone honest to run the country it's no use having a politician. :)

In response to what Justin Trudeau was saying.... I like what Sir Wilfred Laurier said 108 years ago......

WHAT WILFRED LAURIER THOUGHT OF THE IMMIGRANTS

wanting to becomeCanadians in 1907.

«First of all we must insist that the immigrant that comeshere is willing to become a Canadian and is willing to assimilate our ways, heshould be treated on equal grounds and it would be shameful to discriminateagainst such a person for reasons of their beliefs or the place of birth ororigin. But it is the responsibility of that person to become a Canadian in allaspects of life, nothing else but a Canadian. There can be no divided allegiancehere. Any man who says that he is a Canadian, but tries to impose his customsand habits upon us, is not a Canadian. We have room for only one flag, theCanadian flag. There is room for only two languages here, English and French. And we have room for loyalty, but only one, loyalty to the Canadian people. Wewon't accept anyone, I'm saying anyone, who will try to impose his religion orhis customs on us.»

Wilfred Laurier, 1907

So how can you call Mr Harper on what he is doing? Quite frankly I think we need to get back tobasics..... Either you are CANADIAN or you are not. I am a 2nd generation Canadian. My grandparents all came from Scotland. They were not Scottish-Canadians.... Theybecame CANADIANS.... Mostly look at the last sentence of Mr. Laurier'squote. This tells me HE was a trueCanadian.... You are not and its appearing to me that this whole party is onthe same bandwagon.... We don't want to upset the immigrants so we will just bow down to them and give MYCOUNTRY AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Was this country not BUILT on CHRISTIAN philosophies? Does the Canadian national anthem say Allahkeep our land? Buddah keep ourland? NO IT SAYS "GOD KEEP OUR LAND" Lets get back to what our country was builton. If it offends the muslims, that is too bad. This country was not built on Islamicphilosophies. If they want a countrythat will accept their beliefs I believe that there is lots of room where theycame from. Don't you find it ironicthat the muslims and Islamic immigrants come here, complain about them being minorities anddemanding rights for minorities? Whenthe countries they came from that have Islamic laws and muslim beliefs there are NO MINORITY RIGHTS? So please let me know what you think MrTrudeau. I would love to hear what youhave to say.

TAX PAYING CANADIAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
