Job quality in Canada at 25-year low, says CIBC

Not happy in your job? Feel like you can’t get ahead. A new study by CIBC Economics says you may have ample reason.

CIBC says its index of Canadian employment quality is at a 25-year low, and nothing the Bank of Canada can do to adjust interest rates is likely to fix the situation.

In fact, its job quality index has been trending down for the past 25 years and is 10 per cent below its level in the 1990s, the CIBC report said.

That means more people are working part-time instead of full-time, more people are self-employed instead of having secure employment and more are in low-wage jobs than at any time in the last 25 years, says CIBC economist Benjamin Tal.

"The damage caused to full-time employment during each recession was, in many ways, permanent. That is, full-time job creation was unable to accelerate fast enough during the recovery to recover lost ground,” Tal said in a release.

Job satisfaction is tied to education.

A BA in Mid Century Kitsch will obviously get you a job sorting crap at Value Village and nothing more.

Nobody has to end up as the Value Village Idiot if the make the right choices.

We are competing against China, in the last 25 years. They kick our a$$ at cheap educated labour.

Only one way to fix that. Stop buying from China ;)

No wonder one-third of Canadians say they've "fallen behind" financially over the last decade..

that's because a third of the people are stupider than the majority. usually spend more money on sh!t they want rather than stuff they need.

Has anyone stopped to think what role the advances in technology have to do with this? Just thinking back on my own occupation of surveying, what took a 4 man crew a week to accomplish 40 years ago, can now be done by one man in a day.

Yes , we need less humans today. Human resource is to abundant and demand for it is falling. So it's perfectly normal what is happening.

Going to start having to look into being self sufficient again.
