Mammoliti wants to 'leverage' council seat before switching
As the Toronto Sun reported first, Mammoliti was “contemplating” giving up his seat beside Mayor John Tory in the council chamber to Deputy Mayor Denzil Minnan-Wong.
But Mammoliti didn’t end up announcing a seat swap during Wednesday’s meeting and instead said he’s still negotiating the switch — his “starting point” in the seat trade talks was asking Tory agree to a tax freeze for the next four years.
“I’m not saying no,” Mammoliti said after not opting for the switch on Wednesday.
Minnan-Wong said that he was up for the switch.
“The mayor and the deputy mayor have to have a close working relationship,” Minnan-Wong said. “There is a certain utility to be able to sit right next to him.”
Tory shrugged off the seat shenanigans and said, “If it ever happens then it’ll happen.
“I’m just here to go and sit in the council chamber and get results,” Tory said. “I’ll sit in the press gallery if that’s necessary. We’re just going to move forward and deal with the business of council.”
Mammoliti argued “the seat is worth a lot.”
“For me it is all about assurances on not increasing property taxes,” he said. “We’ll see what dialogue occurs over the next few days to satisfy me. If not, I’ll stay in my seat.”
He said “that seat is worth $300 million” because he argues $300 million could be found in the budget before council has to raise property taxes.
“If that’s the only leverage that Ward 7 has in this new administration, this new chamber, then I’m going to hold out until I know that property taxes aren’t going to be raised incredibly,” Mammoliti said. “I just can’t in my own heart give out a seat without talking about property taxes in this city.”
This isn’t the first time Mammoliti has been asked to move his “hot seat.”
Doug Ford asked in 2010 if he would change seats so he could sit beside his brother, then-mayor Rob Ford, according to Mammoliti. He said no to the deal.
“There was no real leverage back then,” Mammoliti said. “This is leverage. You’ve got to appreciate leverage when you have it.”
