New Brunswick abortion restriction lifted by Premier Brian Gallant

Premier Brian Gallant is removing a key regulation that has restricted access to abortion services in New Brunswick for two decades.

Gallant made the announcement at a news conference Wednesday morning in Fredericton.

The premier promised in the election campaign to review Regulation 84-20, which requires women seeking a hospital abortion to have two doctors certify it as medically necessary. The review identified barriers to abortion services, according to Gallant.

It also requires the procedure to be done only by a specialist, whereas other provinces allow family doctors to perform abortions.

The so-called two-doctor rule has been in place for two decades, supported by previous Liberal and Progressive Conservative governments.

“Identifying those barriers was an important step towards eliminating them,” Gallant said in a statement.

Gallant said the new regulation will no longer require two physicians to certify the procedure is medically necessary, effective on Jan. 1.

I predict this will turn into another abortion debate thread which will run in circles on both sides. :D

Not much really changed. It's still by necessity but just one doc to approve. It's just a cost saving measure.

Most babies are conceived thru casual lust, or sullen habit.

I am sure that thousands of unborn babies will be feeling a lot less secure.

There is great access in Canada for a woman to kill her unborn baby.

If she is too lazy in addition to being stupid, taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for her lack.
BTW for the record, I am Pro-choice but anti abortion.

Have to explain that one. Or do you mean anti abortion as a means of birth control?

ha, I know I was.

I am sure that thousands of unborn babies will be feeling a lot less secure.

My mother considered it with me because of her age, her relationship (or lack thereof) with my father and the place she was in life. I was oblivious to the whole thing and would have still been had she gone that route. I imagine most of the unborn couldnt care less one way or another.

If she is too lazy in addition to being stupid, taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for her lack.

Are these women not taxpayers? They more than pay for it on their own through taxes over time anyway.

Babies in the first year or so would also not be worrying about being killed.

Neither are born babies viable outside The womb so that argument falls apart.

Life obviously starts at the moment of the sperm entering the egg and dividing. The cluster that starts dividind is also a unique baby human with unique DNA. If not, please explain what species it is.

So I am anti-abortion . However, much I despise the act, I have to accept that medical technology makes it impossible to regulate, and that a woman has to have the right to make the choice. SO i am Pro-choice.

There is your problem. life begins at birth, not before.

Nonsense. Obviously life begins at fertilization. Long before birth. For your strange argument to hold it would be acceptable to kill a baby moments before its head clears the birth canal.

Note that I used the word 'acceptable' not 'legal'. There are no laws at all in Canuskistan regarding abortion.

That isn't religion speaking (I am an atheist), it is scientific fact.

Nope. I have had my say. I am scientifically correct even if no one agrees with me.

There is nothing more to say.

Chalk another one up for the Culture of Death.. and its war on the most vulnerable and innocent of our society. I'm sure Gallant will be able to justify the holocaust though (in the Last Judgement) on the basis of 'human rights'.

Pro-Choice doesn't mean that you'd have an abortion
it just means you think the choice is yours, not the gov'ts.

The child doesn't get any voice or choice in the matter though. Sounds like 'equal' justice to me.

Children don't get to vote, drink alcohol, smoke, enlist, drive, use a stove, own a gun, either.

Children are only children once they're born.
