Regina, Saskatchewan – Canada is the world’s top agriculture trader when compared to all other countries on a per capita basis, according to Farm Credit Canada’s (FCC) annual report on global trade.

“When viewing Canada’s agriculture trade numbers through the lens of this country’s population, a clear picture emerges,” said J.P. Gervais, FCC’s chief agricultural economist. “It shows the agriculture sector is more important to Canada than all other countries, including the United States, Australia and the European Union.”

“This is significant because it points to strong opportunities and a bright future for Canadian agriculture,” said Gervais, in releasing the FCC Ag Economics: A 2014 Look at Global Trade report.

I'm not surprised by this. But the data is self serving. If you had a city of 10000, and in it you had a trillionaire, and 9999 people who owned nothing, what would you say to a neat report that bragged about the city, saying the average net worth of its residents was $100,000. Nice place live, no? What was the export value per tillable acre? And how do we stack up? After all, Europe has a lot more people occupying a lot less room, yet they seem to perform very well. Statistics are a funny thing. They can say anything you want someone to hear.

Oh and BTW, just to be clear, the chart isn't about exports, its about trade (export and import) - which simply means we trade a lot.

My farm is the size of a small city (7 sections) with just me and my nephew running the show. If you can find a farm the same size in the EU run by two people, I'd love to know how they pulled it off.
