Quebec home-based daycare workers set to strike Monday

Nearly 14,000 home-based daycare workers in Quebec are set to strike Monday.

The workers have been without a collective agreement since November 2013, the union representing them says.

On Friday, the province’s family minister Francine Charbonneau cancelled negotiations and accused the workers of being impatient.

The union, Federation des intervenantes en petite enfance du Quebec, says pay is a major point of contention. It claims the workers put in 50 hours a week but only get paid for 35.

The union also points to a set of rules relating to the ratio of children to workers. Many home daycare workers are female, and those who run publicly-subsidized daycares are often unable to have their own children at their facility as a result of child-to-worker ratios, FIPEQ says.

In July 2014, parents of more than 90,000 children had to make alternate daycare arrangements after workers staged a one-day strike.
