CBC announces ‘significant’ production cuts as it struggles with flagging ad revenue

TORONTO — The CBC is slashing 25 per cent of its workforce over the next five years, while cutting back evening newscasts and in-house production in a bid to shift its focus from radio and television to digital and mobile services.

The public broadcaster announced its five-year strategic plan Thursday as it grapples with a $130-million budget shortfall due to federal cuts, flagging advertising revenues and the loss of hockey rights to Rogers Media.

By 2020, the broadcaster plans to slash 1,000 to 1,500 jobs, although it says that goal will in part be fulfilled by retirements and attrition. These staff reductions are in addition to the 657 job cuts it announced in April.

In a heated town hall with employees, CBC president Hubert Lacroix faced calls to resign. He said the broadcaster must transform itself from a “producer to a multi-platform broadcaster” in order to stay afloat.

He said that advertising revenues have shifted to global players like Facebook and Google and financial support for public broadcasters has decreased. Even conventional private broadcasters are not profitable, he said.

“The system is broken,” he said. “Meantime, as these shifts are happening, large numbers continue to watch television and listen to radio in traditional ways. In fact, Canadians on average are watching more television, not less.

“So these services will continue to be relevant and essential in this new media universe. We’re actually moving from a conventional world whose model is declining towards a new world that cannot yet pay its own way.”

Lacroix was quoted in a CBC story saying the CBC will not close any stations across the country, but 90-minute evening television newscasts will be cut to 30 or 60 minutes.

“We used to lead with television and radio,” Lacroix was quoted as saying in the story. “Web came and then mobility came. We are reversing, we are inverting the priorities that we have. We’re going to lead now with mobility, we’re going to lead with whatever widget you use.”

The CBC is aiming to double its digital audience so that 18 million Canadians — or roughly half of the country — use its online or mobile services each month by 2020.

CBC has some great radio, but the corp has it's own political bent that is evident in their radio/TV journalists.

Impossible to take them seriously when they display this kind of privileged and entitled attitude

Its no wonder they are broke. Millions wasted on Olympic bids, World Cup Rights. And yes, they were living off of HNIC. Now they actually have to budget. Perhaps they can waste less money on those quality Canadian shows they shove down our throats and nobody watches.

There's a 100 other Gov't expenses that should be cut before they start dismantling C.B.C.

I agree but I think they could cut back on the gender issues a bit. Seems like every day there's an hour or two devoted to it. Otherwise they are good at covering issues germane to Canadians!

Biggest real funding cut to #CBC (external - login to view) was $400 million done over a decade ago by Liberals. Note how "dismantled" CBC is silent on that.

CBC cuts jobs, continues free music giveaway

OTTAWA - Despite a parliamentary mandate to provide radio and television services to Canadians in exchange for an annual $1.1 billion subsidy, CBC says it will shift more of its resources to web and mobile productions while cutting core services.

The state broadcaster unveiled its new five-year plan in a town hall Thursday, one that will surely leave supporters and detractors upset.

Local supper hour newscasts will be cut from 90 minutes to 30, and successful markets will get 60 minutes of local news.

By 2020, the CBC could also shed as many as 1,500 jobs through retirement and attrition. The plan also calls for selling off as much as two million square feet of real estate.

It would be a shame to lose the CBC. Although I think it needs to be leaner and more competitive.

Maybe this attitude is part of of the problem.

CBC has contributed many things to Canadian Media, but it needs to be stay competitive. Shows like Little Mosque on the Prairie aren't going to strengthen their viewership. Not everyone that criticicizes CBC is a Redneck (see Nugglers post)

I think a good station/channel devotes some coverage to minorities I also think they try to keep the ratio in line with the ratio of the population.

P.S.: In order to watch a CBC news video, you have to watch a video commercial first !

Doesn't matter what the news is about. Could be bout an infant getting burned to death -----FIRST !, ya gotta watch the fu*king commercial - selling anything from condoms to cigars.

Point is this : They don't show those commercials for free . Must make millions off them.....so, more cuts coming.

Some accountant is not doing the job, or doing it too well.
