MONTREAL - A former member of Quebec's legislature has been found dead on the side of a private road in a town on Quebec's Gaspe Peninsula.
Nancy Charest, 54, was a former Liberal politician who represented the riding of Matane from 2003 until 2007. She ran unsuccessfully for the federal Liberals in the 2008 and 2011 elections.
Her death was confirmed by her former Liberal riding association. Association president Rodrigue Bouliane told QMI Agency that Charest's body was discovered between Friday night and Saturday morning.
Quebec provincial police Sgt. Melanie Dumaresq said police are investigating Charest's death. The Quebec coroner's office has been called in, and an autopsy will be conducted in the coming days.
Both Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre and former interim Liberal leader Bob Rae tweeted their condolences.
Coderre, a former federal Liberal cabinet minister and MP, wrote that he "just lost a good friend."
