Rob Ford drove past open streetcar doors: TTC union

A confrontation between Rob Ford and a TTC driver occurred Wednesday because the mayor drove his vehicle past the open doors of a streetcar, the head of the transit workers’ union said Friday.

“My understanding is that Mayor Ford bypassed an open door and the operator then got off the streetcar – left his seat anyways – to advise the motorist, not knowing it was Mayor Ford, of the seriousness of the violation, as well was the concern for our passengers,” Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 president Bob Kinnear told the Star.

Failing to stop behind the open doors of a streetcar is a violation of the Highway Traffic Act, with fines of $109.

Ford’s office said Friday morning that they would not comment on the matter.

The incident happened near Dundas St. W. and McCaul St., according to Kinnear, who said Ford drove past the rear doors but stopped before the streetcar’s front doors as passengers were boarding.

The mayor rolled down his window and “had some comments for the operator,” said Kinnear.

The streetcar driver was “interviewed” by the TTC following standard procedure after Ford lodged a complaint, he said.

Kinnear said he didn’t know the exact nature of the mayor’s complaint.

TTC spokesman Brad Ross has confirmed that the operator left his seat on the streetcar he was driving to speak to the mayor, something the driver agreed he shouldn’t have done.

“The operators are not permitted to leave their seats to have a discussion of any kind with any motorist,” he said.

Ross wouldn’t say what the TTC driver might have said or done after he got out of his seat.

TTC chief executive officer Andy Byford confirmed there was a complaint about an incident involving the 505 Dundas streetcar.

“The mayor actually phoned my office. I did speak to the mayor. The actual incident related to the operation of one of our streetcars. In the same way as normally we wouldn’t comment on specifics around a customer complaint, I’m not going to on this occasion,” he said.

“We followed the normal process of investigation that we would regardless of who the complainant was… I’m satisfied that the matter has been looked into.”

Kinnear said that Toronto motorists are usually well aware of the traffic rules around streetcars, but many summertime tourists in the city often don’t.

“We’re not opposed to our members advising the public of the rules in the interest of safety for our passengers,” he told reporters Friday morning.

“The TTC does not encourage our members to get into verbal discussions with motorists. But I think you can understand from the operator’s perspective, when we see this continuously throughout the day, it becomes frustrating. It becomes very concerning for our passengers and the safety of our passengers.”

The driver is back at work and no disciplinary action has been taken, said Kinnear.

Ross told the Star the operator didn’t miss any time at work as a result of the incident and the matter is now considered closed.

Just two guys having a discussion about passenger safety no doubt.
One what if someone did get off at the last second and suppose it
was a child? Ford would have a whole new set of problems

What if the driver go out of his seat and someone stole a bus load of
passengers? he would be in a hell of a pile of trouble.

The Problem is, this hopefully one term Mayor the embarrassment
of Toronto really did start the action by seriously violating the law, He
does have a sense of entitlement after all he is the Mayor.

This will be a series of incidents until election day when hopefully the
people of the center of the universe can correct the problem they made
in the first place.

Didn't say he would blaze a new trail but having a piece of equipment stolen
under those circumstances, with passengers aboard has the potential to be a
serious problem.
Ford is an idiot and the people deserve what they get for electing him, what
is that saying? Something too good to be true well you know the rest. The
problem is all too often some politician comes along with some simplistic ideas
and by the time they're finished society is worse off than when they started.

I was pretty busy last week to post much.

I noticed you didn't get to it.

Wasn't it front and centre at QMI? :)

So there's two sets of rules to follow those for Rob Ford and those for the rest of us?

He risks running someone over by driving past open doors and then gets bent out of shape when the operator leaves his seat, like I said this guy is a total psycho, didn't he just about go postal on some reporter a little while back? From the sounds of it he's also into the same kind of secrecy as Harper, another really promising sign from an up and coming Conservative.

Mayor is a non-partisan position

Wow, you actually make non-trolling type posts.

Mike "Common Sense but kill people in Walkerton" Harris is one of his advisors so I kind of doubt he's going NDP or Liberal when he makes the inevitable move to provincial or federal politics.

And his "screw you all" approach to politics fits in well with what we have now with Harper.

So he didn't pass an open door after all. My my. The story just gets more and more intriguing.

Mayor Rob Ford says he did not illegally drive past the open front door of a streetcar on Dundas St. W. last Wednesday, as the president of the union representing TTC workers alleged last week — and the union president believes him. (thank jeezus)

Ford, speaking Tuesday in a rare media scrum in the City Hall press office, said he drove past the closed back door but stopped in advance of the open front door.

The driver then “came out and accosted me,” Ford alleged. Referring to the streetcar as a bus, Ford said: “I don’t know exactly what was said. He says, ‘Get behind the bus.’ I don’t have to get behind the bus, the back door’s closed.

“I talked to (TTC chief executive) Andy Byford,” Ford said, “and asked him, ‘What is the rules on that one? When the back door’s shut, are you allowed to move up to the next set of doors?’ As far as I know, yes. And everybody does it.”

Police Staff Sgt. David Stirling confirmed that the Highway Traffic Act requires drivers to stay back two metres only from a door that is open. He added that it is still “probably most prudent and safe” for drivers to stay behind the streetcar entirely if the front door is open and back door is closed.

Bob Kinnear, president of Local 113 Amalgamated Transit Union, said he now accepts that Ford stopped before the open front door. (He had said last week that he was not entirely sure what had happened.) (except of course in the OP story  ) But he said the mayor still endangered passengers’ safety by passing the closed back door.

“Even if the front door’s open, you’re not to pass the rear doors. Because the rear doors are active. What I mean by that is any passenger, at any time, can step down onto the steps and exit the streetcar,” Kinnear said.

Last week, Kinnear said that he had been told Ford passed an open door. He said the driver then left his seat “to advise the motorist, not knowing it was Mayor Ford, of the seriousness of the violation, as well as the concern for our passengers.”

Ford called Byford directly to complain about the driver’s conduct. The driver was told not to leave his seat in the future, but he was not disciplined.

Mayor Rob Ford says he didn

Stay tuned for more from the Star.

Oh suddenly you're interested in this story, huh..

.. and it was nice how you edited into the story to dissuade people from reading this part..

But he said the mayor still endangered passengers’ safety by passing the closed back door.

You're a bit of a trickster, ain't ya?
