Rob Ford loses bid to buy park land
TORONTO - Mayor Rob Ford’s request to buy a small parcel of parkland next to his Etobicoke home has been rejected.
The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority executive committee voted 9-1 Friday against the sale of the 250-square-metre parcel of land.
Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker said the mayor should never have filed the request, calling it “a violation of public trust.”
He said the sale could spark a series of applications to buy land in order to extend backyards.
“To do this would be a horrible precedent,” De Baeremaeker said.
Ross Vaughan, Ford’s representative at the meeting, said the Fords didn’t intend to build on the property.
“Disposal to this applicant is not going to change the nature of the property,” he told the committee before the vote.
The land was meant to provide additional protection to the Fords, Vaughan said.
“The fact that allowing one person to purchase property opens the floodgates for other people to purchase property is a specious argument,” he said, adding “every situation has to be considered on its own merits.”
