Or should he at all. And where? Why Toronto? Why not?

If you care enough, tell the Star.

I say enough with the thing already but for those that are suffering and require a cathartic civic release, do a park, library or a food bank.

Naming streets after dead yahoos or celebrity schmucks ain't for me.

Build a monument in Quebec City for defeating le Bloc.

Do we typically memorialize leaders of the Opposition?

I know Stanfield has an airport, but then again, he was Premier, wasn't he?
The airport was named after him not for being Premier but for his innovations in underwear.

On a national basis I don't see any reason to memorialize him. If a city like Toronto wants to or a province wants to, then thats their business but he didn't make enough of a contribution to the nation to warrant a national memorial. He was a politician in a fractious period in Canadian politics, who claimed a certain agenda and was fairly true to it and his base, not a great statesman or saint.

Exactly.....I wouldn't whisper a word of criticism of Layton personally at this moment.....but the reaction to his death is simply over the top.

You pretty much nailed it, Wulfie; cept, I would say he was a bit of a statesman also.

Far as "mass hysteria" goes, the only example of that I've seen is on talk radio and the media in general, whose very living depends on spreading it deep and wide.

When one hears neocon Mark Sutcliffe (CFRA) going on and on and on about a "socialist leader", crying the crocodile tears, and almost thumping the bible regards Jack, you know there's a modicum of horesh it there somewhere.

Someone somewhere wants to name a park or build a statue in his honour, so be it. If not, so be it.

I believe he was a good man, worked hard for his party, and Canada, spoke the truth as he saw it . History will be kind.

I got the impression Jack was the sort of guy who would be satisfied with a simple grave marker and kind thoughts. Who really wants a memorial for pigeons to poop on?

I used to walk past this grave twice a day while going to grad school at U of S. Even though he was never PM I knew I'd still sometimes stop and pay my respects. I don't really know why but something inside said it was the right thing to do. There has been many a student who have whizzed on it but I'm sure by now the powers that be have made them pay for it.

It's times like these that I like to go to my archived mail and reread the email I got from levant begging his readers to send him money, and then read the email letting me know that his paper was being shut down.

Who cares if the City of Toronto gives him a monument? Fack, we have a square named after a former mayor who's sole distinction was owning Bad Boy furniture.
