Key Resolutions up for debate

Adopt A New Constitutional Preamble
If this resolution is adopted, the word “socialist” will be stricken from the party’s 50-year-old constitutional preamable..

Ensure Intergenerational Equity
“What we’re finding in the medical community, and in the U.S. in particular, is that people are being excluded [from insurance policies] because of pre-existing conditions that may or may not manifest,” Mr. Capstick said. “This type of thing is happening subtly here already — for example, in terms of how some doctors choose patients — and this is a suggestion by the NDP to stop this sort of thing before it arrives in Canada wholesale.”

Protect Language Rights
..
“fostering Canadians’ right to live and grow in the official language of their choice.”

Ensure Food Security and Food Sovereignty
..access to “high-quality, healthy food” and food sovereignty, but it also contains specifics on food safety. Among the more ambitious recommendations is a call for a moratorium on new genetically modified crops until the regulatory system is reviewed and reformed.

"Fringe" Resolutions Submitted for Consideration

Decriminalize Marijuana Growth and Consumption
Mr. Larsen, who will attend the convention as an elected delegate for Vancouver East, said at least four riding associations have supported his group’s proposed resolution aimed at eliminating fines and criminal penalties for using and growing marijuana.

Boycott ‘Apartheid’ Israel
The resolution calls on the NDP to “campaign for an end to the rule of apartheid laws that make Israeli Arabs and Palestinians second- and third-class citizens under occupation.”

Declare Solidarity With Cuba
It asks the NDP to “encourage party members to visit the island” and to demand “an end to the U.S. embargo.”

Repeal the Clarity Act
The Act, which was passed by the Liberal government after the 1995 referendum, essentially gives Parliament the legislative teeth to override a referendum decision. Mr. Weisleder said the resolution to support scrapping the law was approved by about a half-dozen riding associations.

Nationalize US Steel, Big Oil and Gas, and the Auto Industry
Mr. Weisleder said several bodies have supported this series of three separate proposals that seek to address the “failed capitalist system” that has “squandered untold wealth.”

The key resolutions seem pretty reasonable, some of the fringe proposals are kinda what I expect from the more radical end up the party and are past socialist goals (nationalization, commie solidarity etc)

Lets see the Clarity Act how about that. Does that mean the Sherbrooke Declaration takes presedence?
Nationalize US Steel. USS would probably be more than pleased for the NDP to do that. Just make sure USS gets an equitable return
Nationalize the Oil Sands (this is what I heard) How quick do you say Alberta that 51st state. If the Ndp wants Federal development of Oil Sands why not get started on Melville Is.
Nationalize the Auto Industry.Do they really want to piss off the Americans.
Nothing wrong with the Key Resolutions just window dressing.
What is going to be interesting is whether they can even keep it together with what the PQ wing, the (waffle) socialist wing, the Layton wing, the original grassroots Western wing and the "I'm not sure how we got here" wing.

Typical NDP, all their resolution deal with spending money !!
These idiots all they know is how to spend our money, they think we are too stupid to know how to spend money so they always want to do it for us..
Not only that but they tell us it's good for us and they even like to do it for the taxpayers.

The NDP have never come up with ways that would generate more revenue for the country, they only know how to raise taxes. Real dumbo's !!!

Lack of revenues is the problem, not finding ways to spend it!! Somebody tell them !!!

Just wait for it.....someone from the left wing church of hate, totally oblivious to their flawed logic, will come out and write " Well, you are too stupid to know how to spend money...."

No, the context for that thread is entirely about dropping socialism from the constitution.

This thread is about an entire platform that may be adopted by the next election.

It's a pretty vast difference in terms of breadth and scope.

I respectfully disagree. For a person that doesn't give a damn about the NDP, it is just a different day of the convention, same pile. :)

Yes, well that's understandable if you're going to stick to the armchair analysis of the average joe. ;)

Protect Language Rights
..“fostering Canadians’ right to live and grow in the official language of their choice.”

I'm interested to see what the NDP does on this. The way I read this, they are advocating for more English language rights in Quebec and more French rights elsewhere... which will kill their Quebec support faster than just about anything else they could have done. Nothing seems to evoke a stronger reaction in Quebecers than being told their artificial preservation of Quebecois language is endangered.

It'll be a tough balancing act between that and supporting provincial jurisdiction over language policy as they are proposing for Quebec. Unless they'll propose this for Quebec only and not elsewhere? That'll be a tough sell too.

Not to mention other issues, especially with regards to First Languages, etc.

I was reading they'll change it to "social-democratic". Some more left-leaning socialists will not like that, so I could see a clash there.

It is the fringe resolutions that turn thinking people off the dippers. Especially since it is mostly these fringe ones that control the party.
Any bets on what their stand on the postal strike is?

I will pee my pants if they declare themselves a socially democratic party.
