There may be a few that teach truly free thinking, but it's not many. Pretty much every school in existence expects only students to fit with its frame of thinking. Parents need to do all they can at home to encourage critical, free thinking.

Nugg, they need that regardless of what school they go to. Public school doesn't teach your kids to think freely, they teach them to regurgitate the views of their teachers/administrators for the large part, and those aren't always views that are wise or beneficial.

If I was principle and kids misbehaved, I would give them extra homework and force them to stay after school to do their homework. I guarantee that they would shape up pretty quick, either that or lose their afternoons by being struck in school.

Suspension? That's no punishment. The kid gets to stay home from school. What kind of punishment is that? I recall one instance when I placed a bunch of caterpillers on my teachers desk just before she got to class and got a one day suspension. I was overjoyed of not having to go to school the next day. Most of the time however, I got detentions and extra homework, usually for oversleeping and arriving late. I hated staying after school, so I would try my best to not be late.
The public system apparently was more than happy to leave misbehavior until the magical line they draw called 'zero tolerance', regarding bullying or violence. Then, the kid is out on suspension and the trend is set.... the teachers won't guide you, but will swiftly and severely punish you if you cross a line that they haven't taken the time to define for you.
