(Ok, side note: I have heard multiple times that I complain to much, keep that issue out of this thread)

Is it just me, or do you get annoyed when "patriotic" Canadians say this and that about Americans.

Now, this is different then the nation of America, I am talking about when Canadians bash the PEOPLE of America.

This extremely annoys me.. there is many flaws with the USA, but Americans aren't "evil".

Is it now patriotic and "Canadian" for us to make fun of and bash American people? Do we really lack an identity so much that we have to call identify ourselves as "NOT American".

This has always been an annoying thing to me.

Thoughts?

I'm annoyed by the fact that Canadians can't find any way to say what's good about their country, other than comparing it to the US, in favourable or unfavourable way. That's why people in Canada often tend to identify with their province more than their country. Their country is unsure of itself and grasping for identity.

The reason for that is because there are many identities. I have more in common with people from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho than I do with Saskabushers, Kebekers, and N. Scotians.
As far as Americans as people go, I think they're a fine bunch for the most part, although I dislike their administration, but then I don't like our administration either.

I get upset when folks try to tell me how I should think and feel, but that's about it

I think the current straw-man of "poisonous anti americanism" is, in FACT, mostly a reflection of our current administration here in Canada and how they relate to the current admin to the south. Of course, there's gonna be idiots on all sides who talk the talk without knowing why, but deep down I am certain that what is characterized as "anti americanism" is totally to do with things at the top, NOT the bottom.

Let's just see how long it takes for someone to come in here and start wailing, shall we??

One of these days we should wrap all 403 of these threads into one. Although the other 402 primarily become a consensus that Canadians often bash US government and like US people.

But they do it with such broad generalizations, that is hard to tell Kreskin.

Great insight mabudon. Great post.

As long as Americans and others continue to bash the world and it's people I'll continue to bash Americans. It's impossible to separate the government from the people in a democracy. If you can separate then you're not dealing with a democracy, and that gets to the root of the American bashing problem. When we figure out what we're really bashing we'll see the target clearly.

Oh? Aren't you the one that coined the now infamous phrase of "Americans don't get it"?

Someday, you will learn to discern a Democracy from a Republic. Then again, I won't hold my breath, you're a leftist extremist, Democracy and Republic are not in your vocabulary.

Last year, I think, Oprah had a program looking into why people were anti-American. They went to England, France and a few other countries I cannot remember. What the people said was they disliked the US government but the people were okay. It is the same here in Canada, hate US gov. but like the people. I believe that the Americans are highly sensitive about what their gov. is doing and maybe even feel a little quilty so they take everything as personal attacks, we might feel the same if we were in their position. Canadian anti-Americanism is an intense dislike for the government not a condemnation of the country or its people.

If you people would stop describing your situation as a democracy then I'll enhance my vocabulary to meet the new qualifyer.America is niether a republic nor democratic. The extreme right in America should have the guts to admit it's love of fascism, but like despots of all stripes you wait while the remains of democracy are slowly supressed, you're cowards the whole lot of you.

There would be a lot that Americans don't get. Are you suggesting Americans understand everything on this planet 100%? Not getting it and disliking people are stretch ITN.

It might be the "We The People" stuff. Americans tend to associate themselves directly to the government because their Constitution tells them so. In Canada we refer to our government as "How did those idiots get elected?" A different paradigm.

I agree, will you tell me how do we succeed in voting such idiots into power. Maybe we on CC should begin our own political party. We couldn't be any worse than the ones we already have.

republic=a state in which supreme power is held by the people or it,s elected representatives or by elected or nominated president..

No where in that definition does it mention the Military Industrial Complex, or the Corporate Security Complex the people have been neatly circumvented by the monied class. Have a nice despotic day.
