Today is International Peacekeepers Day.

In many senses, Canada has moved away from its reputation of being a peacekeeper in recent months and years. However, I would suggest that we should return to that facet of our culture, and reinforce that — just because some would contend that Cacnada is no longer a nation of peacekeepers, does not mean that we cannot once again become one.

Nearly half a century ago, the late The Right Honourable Lester Pearson, P.C., O.M., O.B.E., a former Prime Minister of Canada, received the Nobel Peace Prize for his amazing contributions to peacekeeping efforts. Mr. Pearson was largely responsible for bringing Canada into its reputation as a peacekeeping nation, and for that Mr. Pearson is going to be remembered forever. Even if we may have departed from this practice in recent years, it remains a part of us, and we should return to it.

Canada is a nation of peacekeepers.

Let us never forget this, though our Governments might.

International Peacekeepers Day. These are one of the days I truly recognize. 113 Canadian soldiers and other personnel as well as 2,100 plus other peacekeepers from over 100 nations have been killed in action.

While nearly 1,000,000 people have served in the U.N organization including 150,000 Canadians.
