Her Excellency the Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, C.C., C.M.M., C.O.M., C.D., the Governor General of Canada, is to preside over the seventh annual Governor General's Awards in Video and Media Arts ceremony on March 22, 2006; the ceremony is to take place at her residence, and the Government House for Canada, Rideau Hall.

Governor General of Canada[/i]]The Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts recognize distinguished career achievement by Canadian artists in these artistic fields, as well as outstanding contributions to the visual and media arts through voluntarism, philanthropy, board governance, community outreach or professional activities. These prestigious awards are funded and administered by the Canada Council for the Arts. Since their creation in 1999, they have been awarded to 50 recipients.

The distinguished Canadians to be recognized this year include Mowry Baden (a sculptor), Micheline Beauchemin (a textile artist, and weaver), Vera Frankel (a multidisciplinary artist), Peggy Gale (an independent curator and critic), Kenneth Lockhead (a painter), Arnaud Maggs (a photographer), and Peter Wintonick (a documentary filmmaker).
