You can't get a better feel for Canadian culture than by reading Miriam Toews. This Winnipeg author has only written three fiction novels, and all three books have been nominated for and/or won literary awards. That in itself is impressive, but more importantly, the stories themselves are blow-you-away great reads.

Her first is my personal favourite, 'Summer of My Amazing Luck', about life among single mothers living in a Winnipeg public housing complex.

Her latest, 'A Boy of Good Breeding', is about Canada's smallest town, and the mayor's hilarious attempts to maintain that status quo in order to have the Prime Minister come for a visit.

'A Complicated Kindness' is about the struggles of a young girl growing up in a Mennonite village.

All three stories are very funny, in various degrees, the last one being the least funny, at least to me. The other two are absolutely kill-yourself-laughing funny in spots.
