I remember being marched onto the front yard of the school on February 15, 1965, so we could all see the Red Ensign being lowered and the Pearson Pennant unfurled.

Sucks to live in such a time of national indoctrination.

Not all patriots are delusional.

No, they are not. Caring about one's country is not a bad thing. Canada has
been one of the best places in the world to live for quite a few years and that
should be worth a little patriotism.

Best day of my life, from a general quality of life perspective. That flag symbolized our separation from Mother. It's one reason we can still have the Queen of England as our 'monarch' but still hold our head high around the world. All that oil and uranium doesn't hurt either.
Anyone that doesn't feel there is some pride to be had in being Canadian can always emigrate.

Whatever he was, he was pretty damn patriotic.

What if we just like being here without feeling the need to celebrate a piece of fabric? :)

Is that why at the end he sacrificed his people and wanted Germany erased? Not so patriotic. He put himself before his country... that's not patriotic

Why is it so awful to be proud of where you're from? Why do people like you think it is important to ridicule (in a way) the people who like to show pride in their country?

Because there's pride and then there's pride.

And you will define how much pride to have and how much not to have? What is a proper display and what isn't?

That can only be truly defined on a situational basis. People will naturally adapt as they have in the past 30 years - where pride gradually sounds less and less like some WWII propaganda advert.

Don't remember being "marched" ... but I recall the day.

Who were patriots - the ones who saluted as the Red Ensign came down or the ones who cheered when the bright red leaf broke into a clear, blue (and damned cold) sky?
