If foreign taxpayers are stupid enough to subsidize the products we buy, you'd think the Canadian government would be smart enough to take advantage of that stupidity by not raising tariffs.

But oh no. Some Canadian company in Mississauga won't like that, so let's screw all Canadian consumers over for the sake of that company.

Idiots!

Why should we let US companies dump drywall into our country, when they're fighting about our softwood lumber?

It's a basic rule of economics. The more import, the more our dollar drops, the more are exports become cheaper.

Japan learnt the hard way in the 90's that you can't export and never import. The more you do so, the greater the upward pressure on your current. Japan tried all kinds of ways to push its current down for decades until it finally lost control. The yen suddenly started to rise in value, Japanese exports became too expensive, imports dirt cheap, tourism to Japan died, the Japanese started traveling and studying abroad, Japan is still recovering from this.

China is repeating the same mistake.

If Canada allows drywall in, we'll just create something else. It all balances itself out in the end.

Then it would slowly come back, no?

And remember, to subsidize drywall, the US goverents must tax everyone else or borrow. If it taxes everyone else, then that benefits every other Canadian industry.

If it borrows, then it benefits Canada's banking industry. We buy them out.

we have to manufacture

But why drywall specifically?

Tariffs are taxes. The Libs just put a 276% tax on drywall.

Foreign drywall specifically, but yeah.

Taxes aren't always a bad thing, but tariffs always are.

Oh, and Walter. Please don't give me greenies: it throws me off balance whenever you do that.

So, all the anti-dumping legislation world side should just be eliminated, is that your point?

Still unclear how the Fort MacMurry rebuild is affected by this tax/tarrif. The local drywall is still available at the same price it always was.

Yes. Yes of course. Georgia Pacific bought Domtar then closed plants in BC and ON because of carbon taxes and energy costs.

Same thing is happening with cement. Canadians are losing jobs and production because of carbon taxes and energy costs.

Notice that this federal tax only applies in Western Canada. trudOWE jr. just gave westerners the finger.

That's not how I read the article. It seems the tariff applies Canada-wide but is hitting Fort Mac hardest due to massive reconstruction there.

The Canada Border Services Agency imposed the preliminary tariff last Tuesday on U.S. gypsum board imported into Canada for use in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Yukon and Northwest Territories.

How do you figure that it only applies in Western Canada?

Edited to note, I see that it does, in fact, only apply to imports into Western Canada
