VANCOUVER ─ A Surrey, B.C., mother charged with second-degree murder after the body of her eight-year-old daughter was found in a vehicle trunk has been deemed fit to stand trial.
Her lawyer Craig Sicotte said on Monday Lisa Batstone, 41, is currently suffering from significant depression.
"There was an assessment done by a psychiatrist to see whether she was fit to stand trial, and the psychiatric opinion came back that she is fit, but still certified under the Mental Health Act," he said.
"It means she's got significant problems right now mentally that they want to keep her in a hospital as opposed to keeping her in jail."
Investigators initially discovered the body of the young girl, Teagan Batstone, in the trunk of a vehicle after investigating a "suspicious circumstance" report in the 13900 block of 35A Avenue in Surrey.
No trial date has been set, but it returns to court Jan. 26.
The body of Teagan Batstone, 8, was found in the trunk of a vehicle on Dec. 10, 2014. Her mother, Lisa Batstone, 41, has been charged with second degree murder. (FACEBOOK photo)

On the radio they're talking about severe depression and the things that can happen.

This is horrible turn of events. They've interviewed the father on the radio. They talked about the mothers online presence and how she seemed really upbeat and positive about her situation and her daughter.
