A seven-year-old girl died Monday after being crushed by rocks while hiking about 30 minutes north of Vancouver.
In a letter posted to the Lions Bay, B.C., website, the village's mayor confirmed the young girl was part of a regular Monday hiking group on Unnecessary Mountain. Karl Buhr said the girl was "crushed in a rock fall."
Buhr said the girl's fellow hikers tried to rescue the child, and the local search-and-rescue team hiked for 40 minutes to assist, but she never regained consciousness.
The girl's mother and an older sister were also in the hiking group.
The girl's name wasn't released.
