Four cougars killed near B.C. school

B.C. conservation officers euthanized four cougars seen near a school in Cranbrook.
The sibling cougars, estimated to be seven months old, were put down Sunday after a resident who lives near Parkland Middle School saw one killing a deer in their backyard the day before, The Townsman reported.
Cranbrook conservation officer Jared Connatty used four service hounds to track down the cougars, which were soon treed by the dogs in the southeast B.C. city.
Connatty told The Townsman that the concern was the large cats were hanging out near the school and residential area, and a well-used walking trail.
"The other concerning part is at that age they are learning how to hunt," he said. "Oftentimes, they will try to assist the mother cougar in her killing efforts when they are trying to catch their prey."
