It’s not uncommon for artists to become critics. Now, a former Alberta MP and Parliamentary critic has taken a stab at art. Note to collectors: you may need to budget for this auction.
Paul Yewchuk was a cowboy and land surveyor in his teens and early 20s before graduating from medical school in 1960.
In 1968, he ran for office and ended up spending the next 12 years serving as Progressive Conservative MP for Athabasca.
When his political career ended, he went back to medicine, never finding the time to tend to an earlier passion for art. But once retirement came, the door opened to begin painting.
“I’ve done them to decorate my two homes,” Yewchuk said. “There’s just no more room, I’ve got about 60 that I just can’t hang up.”
Now 78, he’s decided to sell his works all together — call it an omnibus auction — and is asking for $3.5 million for the lot on Kijiji. A previous posting had them priced at $4 million but included the house as well.
His days as a builder inspired the materials he uses.
“At the end of every project it was always heartbreaking to see the amount of usable material taken to the disposal,” Yewchuk said.
He takes things like used pieces of plywood, cabinets and doors to paint on. He then mixes old house paint with sawdust to create a mud that he builds into three-dimensional pictures.
Yewchuk points to the uniqueness of his process and the environmental nature of the recycled materials he uses in his works as reasons for the high price. Also, there are a lot of them – more than 400 in total.
He says he’s sold a few pieces in past for up to $1,000.
