The Cambridge, Mass., company AOBiome believes we have dangerously stripped “good bacteria” from our skins via “excessive cleaning” and has introduced for sale “Mother Dirt” spray to add it back.

Chemical engineer and co-founder Dave Whitlock told WBZ-TV in September that he personally has “not taken a shower in over 12 years” but instead uses his odorless bacteria-restoring mist, twice a day, to cover himself with helpful “dirt” that activates the “good” bacteria.

The company will soon begin clinical trials to demonstrate whether Mother Dirt (which also comes in shampoo form) can additionally improve certain skin conditions.

Can we just use regular dirt?

The cleaning is essential to body health, but excessive cleaning with soaps and shampoo is certainly not good.
Of course there is the commensal bacteria which are not harmful, in addition to the normal skin fatty acids, and skin fat secreted by the fat glands present normally in the normal skin, without which the skin will be dry and will crack up and lose its elasticity. So all these will be removed by the excessive cleaning and by the alkalinity of the much soap.

But to leave the skin without cleaning will certainly cause disease and infection and itching and scratching and it obviously is unhealthy way.

In addition to this, although it is good to clean the external ear, but excessive cleaning will lead to removal of the wax from the ear, and if this is too much, it may lead to fungal infection of the ear, like with Aspergillus fumigatus fungus, because the ear wax includes substances which kill the fungus.

No regular dirt is too uncooperative and cannot be counted on to be helpful. One must use special helpful dirt.

I'm sure someone will be along to bottle some of that up any day now.

GENUINE CANADIAN HELPFUL DIRT

It's helpful, eh?

DIRECTIONS:

1. Rub on your body and in your hair daily.

2. Do not bathe or shower.

3. Delete your "Contacts" list.

Of course Canada for the Canadian and the Canadians for Canada; although many of you are sitting there in the Middle East, and still others in New Orleans.

In correction of my post #3 , the most common species of fungus to infect the external ear is the Aspergillus Niger (not fumigatus). It causes the black color of the scrapping from the external auditory canal, such scrapping will appear like the old newspapers.
In addition, there may be bacterial infection, also because of the excessive removal of the ear wax, which is a defense against the infection, just like the fatty acids and the normal non-pathogenic commensals of the skin.

Now the homeless can work up a swear and scrape that off with a dull knife and sell it for a tidy sum and the 'skimmed material' grows back in no time. The Indian at the tip of South America do it as the water is very cold and that thin layer if 'water-proof material' loses heat solewr if it gets wet.

Apply to under-arms and groin area and the spreading will happen all by itself. Be sure to use a Borax solution to wash if you must as it leaves behind a film that also kills parasites and other nasties.

have you guys ever had deodorant stickiness in your arm pits?

baking soda is a good way to get rid of that stickiness - also good for your hair as it makes it feel smooth, too

Might work for a guy that just sits in an office all day and doesn't get dirt. For those of us that work for a living there is a need to wash every day.

He is right about the bactria thing though.
