Alberta company changes sign after complaints of misogyny

An Alberta drilling company has altered a billboard after its portrayal of a “demon” woman ignited controversy earlier this month.
The sign, promoting Killam, Alta.-based drliling company BeDevil Enterprises, portrayed a track hoe, a screwpile, flames, a half-naked woman and the slogan “we drill them to hell and back.” The woman has since been replaced with more flames and the slogan has been updated to read “We drill screwpiles to hell and back to get your job done.”
The original sign had garnered attention on social media with some calling it misogonystic and promoting violence against women and even prompted a visit from the RCMP.
Earlier in the month, Dan McRae, one of the owners of the family-operated business, defended the sign saying he didn’t plan on taking it down.
“We do screw pilings and a lot of people, I guess, just don’t understand it,” McRae had said. “When we say we screw them to hell and back, that’s just an example we’re using. It has absolutely nothing to do with violence against women, misogynistic stuff. It has nothing to do with that. I have as much respect for women as they have for me.”
Killam is about 170 km southeast of Edmonton.
