Petition gathers steam for Edmonton Wolverine statue
First posted: Monday, September 22, 2014 05:56 PM EDT | Updated: Tuesday, September 23, 2014 09:24 AM EDT
Another petition has been started to erect a Wolverine statue in Edmonton.
Edmontonian Jesse Seitz recently posted the call for a life-sized statue of the Marvel comic book character to change.org. So far close to 2,000 people have signed on.
A satirical petition was created previously, calling for a 1,000-foot Wolverine statue to mock the tone of the arena debate. The Wolverine character, according to Marvel Comics, was born in rural northern Alberta.
"It is important to build this statue because in order for Edmonton to be considered a 'world class' city, we NEED a statue similar to the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Statue of Liberty in New York City," the previous petition from Brian LaBelle said.
"Wolverine is arguably the most famous Albertan around the world and this statue would be a major boon for tourism in the city. It is also important because it is what is commonly referred to as a 'catalyst project', meaning it will spur greater growth on the downtown of Alberta's capital city and create numerous spin-off projects in much the same way that the X-Men comic book spun off dozens of other successful books."
That petition drew 1,785 signatures before the petition was closed.
The new petition is available at http://change.org/p/city-council-mayor-don-iveson-erect-a-life-size-wolverine-statue-in-city-hall.
Legally-recognized petitions have a number of requirements available at Petitions :: City of Edmonton.
